Im pretty sure a 76 polaris 440 shouldnt have points. You have a stator, magnet (in flywheel), cdi, and coil. Usually the coil or the cdi craps out.
I fix it nice, cause I fix it twice!

I have a 1974 Polaris 440 Electra that I bought 3 years ago. Don't think the engine was ever rebuilt and it has 145 lbs both cylinders.
I have a Polaris Master Mechanics repair manual that covers that year. It shows that in 1976 there were 2 440 engines.
EC44PO and EC44PT-05 Both had CDI no Points.
My 440 would not fire and I traced it down to a bad ignition switch, always shorted out.
