I dont know what the pricing is where you are, but you are better to go by the square foot and cost plus on the materials. Cant loose that way.

Typically pricing is quantified by the square. A square is about 33.33sqft, which is about 1 sheet of plywood or three bundles of shingles. Price will range based upon location and nature of the job. Are you taking off the old or just laying down over top of it? That will make a huge difference. I think around here your looking at $100/SQ for removal and install plus materials but thats for typical asphalt shingles. Not sure about the metal as that is more of a specialty.

It would be in your best interest to get a lump sum price to have the job complete.
Also make sure that the quote is good for at least 30 days, with the volatility in the price of materials there are some contractors that are quoting jobs and only holding the price for 5-10 days. There are also some contractors that are trying to raise the price on customers because they did not have time to start the project right away and the price of material has since gone up. Make sure they honor the price quoted when the contract was signed, not when they are able to get at the work.
Just remember, if you do not ask, you will not get the answers.

^ So basically your wondering what you should charge him for helping him put the new roof on? That I would do by the hours if you can. Going by the square foot isn't something that normally works out in your favor, even if you've done a bunch of them it's best to go by the hour. As far as how much you charge, well that depends on how much experience you have.
If I remember right I got $10/hour for helping a guy reshingle my ex-boss's place and it was nothing new to me. Tin is alot easier to do from what I've heard. I've always gotten away with just working and finding out what I get paid later, I just work my butt off and don't complain about anything, it's always worked out pretty good...even with people who like to stiff others out of money.
So in my opinion, if the guy seems pretty fair, just let him decide.
