I don't know if this is a deal but it seemed like it. Older guy had it 15 miles north of me on craigslist. Couldn't get it started. Doesn't look used very much. Came with a case and 2 new chains. Its a 16" craftsman. He said "It might be the spark plug, does it have a spark plug?". I said "Yes, could be that or the carb.". He didn't want to mess with it, I paid $35 dollars.
I got it home and managed to get it started without any tools. When I move into my house this week or next I will tear it apart and tune it up. I have never owned a chainsaw, just used other peoples. I am assuming its just like any other 2 stroke motor.

Dump the old gas and put in new premix, saws sit for months and months between uses when used primarily at the home. Dead gas is VERY common. There are not many parts in the carb, but there are diaphrams and gaskets that will have to be replaced if you tear into the carb. Usually that is not necessary. I would have jumped on it for 35 bucks too! It's nice to have a small saw for those little tricky jobs.
Newer saws don't have adjustable jets, (they are set at the factory to aid in emmissions control). Older saws have a low speed jet and a high speed jet that can be adjusted for elevation, just like a sled.

Good thing you only paid $35 for it, because Craftsman saws arent much. They are made by Poulan.
Its probably just bad gas. Its pretty much just like any other 2-stroke, the only other real difference is that instead of having jets inside the carb it has mixture screws.
