I believe thats the bike my coworker has. He rides it as a hyper motard. Its a wheely monster. Top end is like 80 mph and he can't ride it longer than 30 mins (uncomfortable). Its fun in the twistys and doing wheelys but thats about it. He has never used it in the woods.

He said the maintenance schedule is stupid on it. I think he said it requires a top end rebuild every 8,000 miles or something?

Its a typical motocross bike motor. High horsepower/short life. KTMs are typically very reliable, very nice bikes. As long as you change the oil fairly often and arent on the rev limiter all the time, you shouldnt have any problems.
If you are new to dirtbikes, a 400 might be a bit much for you, but I think as long as you respect the power you should be OK.

'01 Polaris Indy 600 XC SP EDGE X
4 1/2" Powermadd articulating bar riser, Pro-X seat, Pure Polaris handguards with Pure Polaris handguard mounts, red Cobra low sno-x windshield, almond/blue primary spring with 10-60 weights and 121" x 15" x .91 track with 96 studs.
7,100 miles on the odometer.

You should be fine then. You might want to spend a little time on Thumpertalk. Theres a huge knowledgebase on that site.
When I first bought my '06 Yamaha YZ 250F I spent about 2 months reading and posting on that site and I went from knowing practically nothing about dirtbikes to constantly have people PM me questions because they said it seemed like I really knew what I was talking about. LOL Great site!

I have heard on many occasions of ktm rfs engines that have lasted for 20,000 miles.
Also you have to change the oil so often because it holds less they hold about 1 liter of oil. I have a husaberg 400 which is practically the same bike just a different color and I have never had trouble keeping the front wheel down. Also the ktm 400 is said to be the ktm with the smoothest power delivery.
It isn't a motorcross engine really so it will last but it will need more maintenance than say a drz 400 and it will blow the doors off of one to. my dad has a dr 650 and it has nothing on our husaberg 400, he had the 400 up to 84 then he let off and he said it was still pulling. I will admit the stock seat is hard as a rock but if you race hare scrambles that is nice, and for $90 you can get a new seat which will be plush.
