05 GT Avalanche 2.0 hard tail w/ disks. I had the same issue as above, my crank kept loosening up after about a year of hard riding and now it creaks a lot even though I try to tighten it after every ride. If it wasn't for working all hours of the day Id have prolly 500 miles on it per year...but I got about 15 miles since graduating. Local trails aren't aggressive enough either.

Ive got a '97 Cannondale Super-V 500 (full suspension). I dont get out and ride trails as much as I used to, but I do still get out every now and then.
Sadly, I use my bike more for daily exercise, so 90% of its life has been spent riding on pavement.
All in all, I cant complain about my C-Dale. Its taken all the abuse that I could dish out over the past 10+ years and nothing has every broken or needed replacing on it. I havent even had to replace the brake pads or tires yet! LOL
Its nice to see that Cannondale still makes the bikes in New Bedford, CT (even the frames) and as of yet havent sold out (like so many other bike companies have) and outsourced the building of the frames to Taiwan or China...

Its pretty much a Trek and Trek has some of the sweetest bikes around, so it should be a nice ride.
The biggest thing will be to look at what components it has on it. As long as the derailers arent cheap, lowend stuff, you should be fine.
When I first got into mountain biking I bought a full-suspension Mongoose bike from Wal-Mart and in less than 2 months of riding the derailers were worn-out.
Compare that to my C-Dale that has Shimano STX-RC components that Ive never even had to adjust the cables on.
Thats the difference in a bike bought from a bigbox store and one bought from a bike shop.

on my full suspension sportchek bike the frame bent from jumping small stuff. I paid 350 for it. best bike u could get from a big store then. sent it in to get fixed and it cost like 500 to fix cause they didn;t know how to true rims and they said they needed to be replaced along with new fork and shifters. needless to say i said "F" that left the bike there and saved up all summer to buy a real bike.

Yeah, those are pretty cheap derailleurs. On Shimano's website they list Alivios are the bottom of the line. They dont even list Acera anymore, but I used to have Aceras on a Trek 1000 that I used to have and they were pretty cheap.
Try finding a bike that has components that are in the middle of the lineup (Hone, SLX or Deore LX). You dont want the cheap components because they dont hold up but at the same time you dont want the absolute top of the line components because they are made to be very light so they are very expensive and require more maintenance and tuning.
It really depends what your budget is though. Not everyone is willing to spend $1000 on a bicycle.
What you could do is buy that Gary Fisher bike and then in the future you could upgrade to better components.

Thats what a lot of people do, especially people who are just starting out or who are just weekend recreational riders who cant afford to go out and buy what is essentially a, "race bike".
They buy a lowend or midrange bike and each year they upgrade the components. Derailers one year, the pedals the next, the crank the next and the hubs next. I dont know if you have an experience with clipless pedals, but those really are the way to go. Once you get used to clicking in and out of the pedals, youd never want to go back to platform pedals or toe clips.
Most bikes nowdays have a lifetime warranty on the frame, so its not as if you are going to need to buy a new bike all the time. As the components wear out, just replace them with better ones.
Take my Cannondale for example, its a '97 and I have abused the heck out of it. I think the front wheel might be slightly bent (because the front brake pads rub off and on) but I havent managed to break the suspension or the frame yet. Cannondale made great bikes. It just a shame that they got stupid, go into making ATVs and dirtbikes and basically caused the company to go bankrupt and then be bought out by an investment firm who, in my opinion, is milking the Cannondale name for all its worth.

^thats to bad that companies end up like that...

I am selling two of my bikes if anyone is interested. One is a 2006 Gary Fisher Advance and the other is a Haro Backtrail X1( not sure on the year between 2006-2007) both are orange in color and have been extremely well cared for. I can get pictures upon request!
