Well as of late I've decided to part out my XLT custom chassis. I've been talking to a good friend quite a bit about buying his sled. It is a 2003 Polaris XC 500. It has 6400 miles, has a new track and was pretty well taken care of. He is asking $1200. I'd like some input from anyone that has owned or ridden one of these Liberty 500 motors (NOT the Fuji 500, it's totally different). Is it underpowered? Reliable?

Any help is appreciated, thanks guys.

powerfull?- YES. its oviously not going to be like a 800 or anything but for a 500 i thought my friends was powerfull for what it was....
reliable?- YES.

great sled in my opinion and not just because i have the 2003 600. my friend has the same sled it was a great sled never had a problem .just maintain it and its good for a long time....why so cheap is my only question but i do understand sleds do nothing but deppreciate in value although i guess it is 5 years old now and it has a few miles...but what kind of shape? $1200 still seems kinda cheap though....

It was one of the strongest running 500 engines ever built (about 105 HP). It would run down quite a few 600 sleds (to their owner’s surprise).
It was a good idea to replace the pistons on those engines on a regular basis. The rings would start catching on the exhaust port after some time and if not replaced before running like that to long it would hook hard enough to ruin the piston and cylinder.
Still is a good engine in a good chassis.
Good Luck

It's that cheap because it is higher mileage (6400) and because it's a good friend of mine. I've known him for quite awhile and he recently picked up a brand new Nytro (ewww). It has a two year old 1.25" ripsaw and the seat was re-upholstered last year along with the rear shocks being rebuilt. I'm kinda thinking I'd be a fool not to pick this machine up.

EDIT: Two most recent pictures of the sled. And yes, I hate the blue C&A's and they would be for sale. Also comes with an extra OEM Poo ski, a used but excellent shape primary clutch and a cover.

Just for your info, that is just the "XC" which is the non ves version. Only has about 82hp. Still a great deal for that sled though.

The XC SP is the ves motor with 105hp.
