I have an old 14' aluminum V-hull boat that I am replacing the bench seat wood and transom. When I removed the wood bench seats I saw that a good portion my flotation foam was gone or damaged bad from critters.

I want to replace or repair what is left.

Any good fixes?
I'm sure regular packing foam would not hold up. Let me know if you have some ideas or answers. Thanks!

Isn't there a spray type of foam that expands? I'll look into it and try to post back tomorrow. I know it was used when my hull was rebuilt/reinforced on my jetski.

There are some 2 part expanding foam kits out there. I found one tonight for @ 30 bucks. The others I found were 70 to 100 dollars.

I have never used the stuff before, so I thought I would see if any of you have delt with this or have some tips.

Couldnt you use normal packing foam, and then maybe glaze it with a thin layer of fiberglass?

The fiberglass resin would eat it up and I just dont want it to break down from vibration age and moisture.

My buddy's response to this thread.

Flatwater guys and boaters use 2lbs, it bonds to the walls and give structural support as well as flotation. 3 and 4 lb foam is just overkill because all it is adding is strength (i.e. a surfboard uses 4lb). Packing foam will not give enough positive buoyancy to provide flotation. Any urethane closed foam is supposed to be water proof but it all ends up absorbing some water.

U have to be sure that you are using marine foam, because reguler expanding foam is sucking water like a spunge.
