ive been pondering fabricating a super lite weight sled.im old enough to remember when sleds had no chaincase.basically the driven clutch was on the drive shaft.so do any of you know why they all went to chain cases, other than some sort of gear reduction?any thoughts would be appreciated.thanks

if you have no chain case you need to run a larger secondary clutch or very small drivers. on the old sleds the track only wieghed 15 lbs, the sleds only weighed 250 lbs, a new track is easily 35 lbs with good traction, and the sleds are at 500 lbs.

the chain case allowed bigger drivers on the track whitch hold the track better and roll easier. the chain case also allowed to slow the machines down. remeber that the old engines only spun 6500 rpm on them sleds, the new sleds are turning 8 grand.

the other advantage with the chain case is that the secondary is bigger than the drivers. so if you want get your drivers low your clutch hung below the floor boards, where the chain case got the drivers down and the clutch up away from the ground.

for a lightwieght sled you can go with belt drives, or put the chain case on the same side as the clutch. the little bit of weight that the jack shaft adds vs the simple, reliable system that it is, I would rather add a couple lbs and use a tried and true system.

Polaris had an older sled called the cutlass that was direct drive. I actually have one of these chassis in my junk pile (secondary was sezied on the drive shaft so no way to replace the riped track so bye bye) the secondary was the same size as a normal polaris secondary if i get a chance ill check on this if you want me too.

Early 90's Indy Lite and Ski-doo Elan in the late 60's were direct drive as well. This solution has been tried a few times, with limited success. Madcow's replies hit the nail on the head.
