well when you guys ride together he needs to use more throttle to keep up most likly. your engine is naturaly more powerful so you need less throttle to get going. I have a 500 and my dad has a 700 and we have the same issue. he gets great gas milage. is your friends a 1999 xc 500 by chance?

How does he drive it? WOT all the time? How does he check his plugs? Run it 1/2 throttle and hit kill switch with throttle still at 1/2. Check plugs. Run it WOT for a 1/4 mile hit kill switch holding throttle WOT till it stops, check plugs. If they are still cardboard then I can't help you. But I can't believe if he's eating gas that his plugs wouldn't be dark. You can also check piston wash by running test the same as I described and then pull plugs and look at top of piston. You'll need a light though. If the pistons are clean as a whistle, you're too rich. Should have a little wash around the intake side and a tille carbon on the rest. if it's all black it's rich.

Any idea how many miles he's getting on a tank? Alot of ZR's are notorious for piss poor mileage.

There's quite a few ZR's out there that only get that...I own one of them. I usually get about 80 miles and am looking for a gas station. Rarely get upwards of 100miles. I ride pretty hard though...lots of throttle...

I had a ZR580 carb, it got 7 mpg. I regreased the rear idler wheels (synthetic grease), made sure the track was exactly centered, adjusted the skis to spec, made sure the skis had good carbide and weren't all chewed up, got it up to about 7.5. Then I got rid of the 6-post primary and put a 9-post AC primary on, made sure it was clean and had a new spring, put a new spring on the secondary, made sure the offset and deflection were perfect, and got it up to almost 9 mpg. I also went to blue marble, went from 9 to 10 with no additional changes. I sold the sled, the guy that bought it gets 9-10 mpg, which is on the awesome side for a ZR. Those engines have never been known to get good mileage, so set up the sled as perfect as you can to get rid of as much power-robbing friction as you can. They CAN get better than 7, honest!

I use to own a 95 ZR 580EFI and that got nearly 100 miles to a tank every time.
My brother has an older ZR 440 and that thing gets worse gas mileage than my 580 did.

You're comparing a 700 to a 500. Just think, a lot of V-6's will get the same gas mileage as a 4 banger or even better sometimes because they don't have to work as hard; I think. My dads 800 gets better gas mileage than my 500 but his is an 08 and has EFI and mine is carbbed

If so it's similiar to what my dad's friend did. He bought a Ford Econoline v6 for the better gas versus the v8 and the v6 gets the same if not worse gas milage than the v8 because it is underpowered for that heavy van.

yea it all depend on the size.
a small car with a small engine = good gas milage
big car with a small engine = bad gas milage.
big car with a big engine = fairly good gas milage
small car with a big engine = great gas milage (except thats usualy in the sports car area so people usualy drive fast in them = not so good gas milage) haha

my wife rides a 2000 xc 500sp, that gets better mileage than mine. my buddy with the AC used it once and asked me what I want for it. something is definately wrong with his. both of the 500s are simmilar in weight and horsepower.

Years ago I had a Pol 500. It was the same way. I got half the mileage than the larger displacement sleds. When they were at half throttle, I was pinned just trying to keep up. It drank gas like there was no tomorrow.

Must be a polaris. I have a firecat 500, and ride it like i stole the thing all the time, and it still get awesome gas mileage. Much better then my buddies 800 rev or another mxz 600, all riding the trails at the same speeds. As a matter of fact it gets about the same mileage as my cousins 660 Turbo ST. So i'd say if your getting that kinda mileage outta a 500 sled, it a piece of S**T.
