Most of them run just fine on 87 octane. The only exception is the Phazer, which runs its best on 93 octane but will still run fine on 87.
If you run 87 in the Phazer, the computer will see that the engine is pinging and it will retard the ignition timing to compensate.
On anything other than a Phazer, unless you have modified the heads for higher compression, you arent gaining anything by running 89 or 93 octane fuel.
The octane rating simply refers to how much the fuel resists combustion and it has nothing to do with the quality of the fuel.
If you have an engine with high compression, you need that higher octane rating to prevent detonation/pinging because the compression of the engine will ignite the fuel before the piston reaches TDC, which over a period of time can be harmful to the engine.
