Haha, thats awesome...They actually had decent looking full face helmets back then. Indy 400 what a great machine, that sled along with the Trail and 500 helped rebuild a nearly bankrupt Polaris from the early-mid 80's.

i have no information on the jet size because they all are different depending on what time of year it is when u ride it warm, cold, frezzing cold, it all depends on the seson and the temp of when u r riding it. the carburator should have numbers on it ar letters so find a company that sells that kind and ask them.

sorry i couldn't help u much

On my 1986 Indy 400, I see there's a higher position upper mount for the front shock, aft of the lower position upper mount. Both of the upper mounting tab sets are on the same transverse shaft, but on opposite sides. I tried to move the shock to the higher of the two mounts, supposedly to increase stiffness, but the body of the shock hits the lower crosstube. There's only one lower mounting position.

The owner's manual mentions changing the shock's upper mounting points to increase stiffness, but does not tell you how. None of the photos in the service manual show the shock in this upper position. What gives? Am I just missing something really obvious?

ok if u send me pictures of your indy 400 by e-mail i will be able to look at them to help you on it, i mainly know alot about the older sleds as far as that stuff goes, because i help my friend rich with his race sleds and he only owns TX, and TX-L's

the indy's came from the tx line so i might be able to help you with it.

because i help him with his suspension since sled racing is different you have to make changes to the suspension if you want to place. i think he put a 86 indy 400 suspension in his 77 tx so i will ask him what he thinks you should do.

Hi David! I'm new to this forum and have a zillion Polaris questions, but I'll go easy on you for now!...
I have inherited two Polaris FanCooled twins, early 70's vintage. One is for sure a 440 tx motor, the other is (I'm guessing) a Colt 295 motor. It looks like the 440, but it was left in the dryer too long and shrunk!
I need any and all info/specs that you have on these motors (plz) plus, if you know how a Polaris tx tachometer hooks to one of these, I'd be grateful.
Both of these motors are going on gokarts. I also have a Sachs SA2-290 (stuck flywheel and cruddy points) and a Rotax 302 single.
