Hey guys,,, I decided to go with Ski-doo.. I live in the NWT and we've got over 2 feet of snow already this winter.. I was just looking into buying a sled this week.. Now we don't have many mountains here, however the snow is very very fluffy and I do plan on doing some exploring..
We don't have groomed trails here either.

Now would I be better off to buy the MXZ or go with something like the Summit for my conditions?

thanks guys

A renegade with a 136" track might be just perfect, or the next step up would be a 144".

the first time you dig in with a shorter track and bury it, you will kick yourself for not having bought the longer track. I suggest summit. You can adjust it for flat land riding, you can't stretch the shorter track when you really need it.

Try looking at the Renegade. It's a crossover sled that will take care of trails and the fluff. My dad has a crossover(Crossfire) sled and he loves it.

Sounds like a longer track with taller lugs is what you are looking for. So that cancels out the mxz at 121". The renegade is only 136".
Sounds like you are looking for a summit. Maybe 144" or more, depends on how much track you want and how much you want to spend.

The people telling him not to get the Summit should probably stop. If he has 2 feet of snow already imagine what it is going to be like in a month. And he also stated that he doesn't have many mountains where he lives. Which means there are still mountains.

Get the Summit. The crossovers with the crappy 1.25" tracks are useless in real deep snow. I live in Labrador with similiar conditions most of the winter and if you really wanna explore the backcountry then you need big lugs and good floatation. Mountain sleds may not be able to go flat out through crazy bumps, but nobody will be waiting for you no matter what the conditions.

For What I am going to use it for, I am thinking the summit.. After driving around today and watching the short tracks getting stuck. I know I'll need the little longer track to get me where I want to go, plus i will be hitting the mountains sometime. Thanks for all the advice guys greatly appreciated

Summit. You dont need a long track. but you do want deep lugs. shortest summit you can find and you wont be let down. and you'll have enough of a sled to play when you want to.

your not going to find asummit with that track^^^its totally useless. im saying a summit 144. or a older summit 141" you wont be let down. more than enough track for anything.

I would go with the Summit 800r in the XP chassis with a 146" track, or if your are looking at getting an older machine I would look at a Summit 800 on the REV chassis with a similar length track.

Price isn't really the issues, it's getting one, see i live the NWT and the ferry's are done travelling now (today actually my luck) we need to wait for the ice road to freeze up which will probably be another month before anything gets in on trucks.. So my options are slim right now, What he has are GTX 550's, MXZ Renegade 4-tec 1200, Summit Fan, Skandic 550, and a 2008 MXZ 600.

I may have to go with the 1200

From that selection I would probably go with the 4-TEC 1200. It has more power than the rest, aside from the 2008 600 (which is about the same give or take), and will have better off-trail capabilities than the the others for the most part. The only thing I would think of doing to the 4-TEC is getting a larger lug track than stock if possible.

Get the 1200 etec. For where you live, you can't go wrong with it. 4-stroke, and extremely reliable.

By the sounds of things the 1200 is the sled for me...
What's the real differences between the 600 and 1200 being four stroke and two stroke I guess being the big one.. haha
What would have more power and things like that..
I'm speding 15 000 so I wanna make sure I make the right choice on it.

The 600 probably produces 115 or so hp. While the 1200 only produces 130hp. The 1200 will get extremely good fuel economy, start easier on cold days, and go for much much longer than the 600 will

Wrong, The 1200 will not get much if any better milage than the E-tech. With a rating of 21 mpg and 900-1100 miles to a tank of oil you can't go wrong with the 600. Plus you have to factor in the power to weight ratio. If you can pick up the etch and strech it once the iceroads freeze up i think you would be sitting better than buying the 1200. It isn't made for off trail but rather for cruising and lake racing. IMO the 600 is the way to go.

It sounds to me like you need a summit 600etec 146. If your not sold on skidoo but like the idea of a fourstroke. Yamaha has the new nytro xtx. it has great power. tipped up rails so in the powder you get 144 inches of track but on the trail the tipped rails make it feel like a 121. It will be about as much as the 4tec skidoo but will be better suited to your needs.imo

the first time you dig out the 4-stroke your gunna be kickin yourself, i would consider the 600 and go on a search for some rail extensions if there is no summit option currently
