Howdy all, I am looking to get a decent portable nav system. I am between a TomTom or a Garmin unit. Price range is around $225 or so. Let me know what you have experienced or have heard about either of these brands, and use specific model names if you can. Thanks.

I use this one,http://www.magellangps.com/products/prod...rodID=1935
it's the Magellan Maestro 3200

It doesn't have a ton of POI's (points of interest) but it does a fair job of taking you where you want. (Entering address in rural areas can be a bit of a pain until you figure out it's method of madness so to speak).

Magellan also has packages that come with everything you need to set it up in your car for under 200.00

I have a Garmin Street Pilot C330 in my vehicle, but I think that specific model has been discontinued and replaced with another. One thing to consider other than the price and the ease of use is the support. Garmin has a great website where you can connect your GPS and download software and map upgrades.

I've used it twice on trips to Florida and back and have not been disappointed.

Ive got a Garmin Nuvi 205 and I really like it. The only real complaint I have with it is that sometimes it doesnt take you on the same route.
I have mine set to "shortest distance" and when I drive from my house to the girlfriend's house it has be take a different route than when I drive from my girlfriend's house to my house.
All in all though, I really like it. I used to just get directions from Mapquest, but the directions were often so vague.
With this Garmin unit, it has the onscreen map and it talks you step by step to your destination, so its pretty hard to get lost.
This past Friday I met my girlfriend at her sister's house for dinner. Her sister lives in the middle of nowhere and I have no doubt that I would have gotten lost if it hadnt been for my Garmin.

I just came across one at Bass Pro. It was made by Lowrance. It will do both land and see. It will work in a car but it will also work as a chartplotter. It would work great for trails and it was only $160

My Garmin did that to me in Pensacola last winter. Drove from my cousin's place to the airport to drop someone off. On the way back it sent me on a totally different path. Around Minnesota it has always sent me on the same path though.

I used to use the mapquest directions too but I like the Garmin a lot better. With the mapquest directions, if you miss a turn or run into a road closed due to construction you are pretty much screwed. The Garmin will just redirect you and get you back to where you are supposed to be.

GARMIN for sure.. no to the tom tom.

I like and own the streetpilot series because I needed the unit to be waterproof on my motorcycle also.

I also have used a garmin nuvi.. I think it was the C330W? or C350W? Anyways it is a great unit.

The best way to get accustomed to GPS units is to spend time on the review sites. Pick the units that fall in your price range from various sources and then google it with "review" after it. Spend time reading the in depth ones.

You will learn about POI's, auto detour calculations, track backs (breadcrumbs), map updates, memory storage, multiple destinations, customizable POI's, WAAS, waypoints, warm vs cold start, and so much more. All GPS's are not created equal.

I guess you could call me an above average user. If you have additional questions post up.

I have a Garmin 260W and use it all over Canada with no problems. Make sure whatever you get is speaks street names. Some only say turn right at next street rather than turn right on main street. In the city without street names it gets kind of confusing.

Seems a ew of you have the Garmin 205/205W. Besides the fact that you don't get the same route all the time, any other quirks? Is this an audio/visual unit? updates available on the internet? How about cost?
found them at Dicks Sporting Goods for 230.00 how is this price?

What do you mean? Are you asking if it shows a map and talks or are you asking if it does other things?

As for the updates, Garmin has software updates that can be downloaded free of charge on their website. If you want to update your map that can also be downloaded but for a charge.

As for the price, I don't think $230.00 is too far out of line but you may want to check around a little more. I would think you could check out pricing on-line at Cabela's, Best Buy, possibly Wal-Mart or Sears.

2 years ago dad bought a Garmin from Cabelas. And we loved it. My brother and i had to come back from Arkansas, it was 11 hours i think. Dad was staying down there with the guy we were hunting with, and they were going to Texas. I grew up basically being the navigator for dad. But coming back i was lost on the map, and the GPS knew right where we were. It took us some weird ways, and we took our own short cuts. Then going through Memphis my brother made a wrong turn, and it showed us how to get back going the right way. Well, my brother ended up using it a lot so dad bought him his own. They are both on car chargers, and always on. They also get used to find our way to new jobs, or to customers houses. We have never had a problem with them. Dads actually showed a couple snowmobile trails up in the U.P. But my brothers is a year newer then dads and his is thin. Dads is the thick one. But my brothers is set up to take pictures off of your PC and put on it. So it has a slideshow, custom background and some other stuff. I think it was like 250 or so maybe. I would go with the Garmin. That makes 4 garmin GPS's that we have. Hopefully we will have 6 or 7 after this christmas.

Yes, thats what I was asking, "Turn left in .2 miles," etc.

Found the same 205W at Dicks, (different sale, different day) for 160.

Anybody have a quick explanation of the differences between, say,
the 205, 250,255, and 260? Kind of new to the whole electronical
navigation stuff, but X-mass is just around the bend.

I use a basic TomTom One 3.5" and it works just fine. Saved my ass multiple times visiting the big city for a week earlier this month. I got yoda for the voice from their site, so I'm told, "Right, you must turn". I've used Garmin, and they're great, but the TomTom was cheaper, without sacrificing the few features I needed. Never had a problem with it. It's got battery power too, so I occasionally take it on my bike as well. They're all over Black-Friday deals for $100. But in your price category, Garmin shouldn't be a problem.

I just bought a Nuvi 200 today for $97 at Walmart. I wanted to try one out before I spent more money. It seems like it's going to work well for what I want it for. After using it just around my local area a little today I don't think I'll be buying anything more expensive.

The Garmin street pilot C330 I have does talk. It will tell you for example to turl left in .2 miles but mine does not say the speak the street name but it shows it on the map and prints it on the right side of the screen.

$160.00 does not sound like too bad of a price for a nav unit.

I know once you get to Nuvi 260 it has the voice that instead of saying "turn left in 500 ft." it says "turn left at elm street." I have the Nuvi 200 with the 3.5 inch screen which says the "turn left in 500 ft." I think it will work fine for my applications.
