After doing a quick search, i couldn't find whats the latest in greatest in TV's. I'm getting my family a new big screen, which one? I'm thinking 46-50 inch HD 1080. Not looking to break the bank on price. But looking for a decent value. Our living room isn't huge but seating will be about 8ft from screen. Mostly watch sports and dvd's. Let me know some options.
Thanks

A good bang for a buck is Vizio. Are you looking for LCD or a plasma? I personally would go with an LCD because of minimal glaring from light. I also prefer the look and quality of an LCD over plasma, but thats a personal prefernce.

I prefer LCD. But a DLP is a bit cheaper. They use alot more power and make more heat though.

I'm willing to bet you own a Sony and not a Vizio. At Bestbuy they have a Sony HD 48 inch(i think thats the size) for like $2500. I also found a Vizio (on another site) for $2300 and it is a 52 inch. I dont own either, but some family memebers own a vizio and a few friends and it is by far the best bang for you buck. Sony you just pay for the name.

I think I would save the money I would have spent on that and buy another sled... The sony 52" Bravia 1080p is also a nice flat panel we have it in the game room

Here is mine that I bought for $1400.00 a year and a half ago at Sam's club.
50 inch Vizio plasma HD. Have had no problems with it and love the picture.
Could not find an entertainment center that I liked so I made my own out of red oak.

I wouldn't go with the 50" if you are only sitting 8ft away. One other thing to think of is it near windows to the east or the west. If you get light from the sunrise/sunset you don't want a gloss screen. The other thing you might want to do is see if there is a store in town that is using either satellite/cable. If you are on cable try to go to a store that is using the same cable as what you are using and not a pre-made dvd. That way you can see what the picture really looks like. I install cable for a living and it always cracks me up when people get a tv home and the picture looks like sh!t.

We just got a 42" phillips from wal-mart this fall, looked at the vizio also. It was about $1500. I was also told that it doesn't pay to go to 1080 yet because cable only puts out 720 anyway. I don't remember which one ours is though.

My recommendation: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?...5216782035
Samsung 46" 1080P LCD with 120hz refresh rate. Best resolution and best refresh rate currently available, currently the latest and greatest.
Sony gets most of the press when it comes to LCD TVs, but Samsung is the best. I used to sell TVs, and I saw a lot more broken Sony TVs come back to the store than broken Samsung TVs.

DLP on a digital signal looks amazing. If you live in the city where the Best Buy's and Circuit City's use cable signal...any big screen seems to look crappy. I seen a DLP when they first came out, it was a clip of this guy singing, and I could swear it was a guy standing there with a TV frame around his head...it looked that real. I haven't really looked into plasma and LCD TV's though, so DLP is the only input I have. Also, DLP TV's weigh a lot less than a conventional flat screen.

At 8 feet anything over a 42" would be a bit much. I really hit Consumer reports before I went to a flat screen(s). Two years ago Vizio had a great rating and I really like it. The 32" Toshiba we put in the bedroom is great too.
Also remember LCDs are great for bright rooms. Plasma's work better in dark rooms.

Hey Darin, let me give you a referral card for DirectTV. I think you get a better deal, and I get some money off my bill for awhile for referring you. I'd go over to Cullens and see what they've got. I like the deal I got with them for an extended service plan. If you don't use the warranty, you get an instore credit for the full amount of the warranty after the warranty expires. I got my HD TV five years ago, and now I'm going to Cullens to buy a refrigerator with my credit from my extended warranty!

Vizio all the way if you are looking for the best bang for your buck. I have a 32" Vizio 720p and love it.
The new Vizio XVT series rivals the Sony XBR's and are about half the price. The new XVT's have a 120hz refresh rate like the Sammie Whim posted but is around $200 cheaper.

DLP's are nice is your main concern is size vs. price. I feel that your sacraficing quantity over size though. Con's - cheap. Pro's - bad viewing angle, not as bright, over-scanned, use lot's of power.
When comparing LCD vs. Plasma: You'd be suprised to find out the screens that all the manuafactures use come from only a handful of suppliers. So to me, the decsion comes down to the details in the set. As PW said, look at the contrast ratio, refresh rate, resolution, and other set features such as number of hdmi inputs, usb input, camera card inputs, etc...
Of course there is the final factor and that the defect rate of the manufacturer. That part I'm not up on.
Good luck and happy viewing.
I reject your reality and substitute my own.

Like Pigboy said, there are only a handful of LCD and Plasma screen manufacturers (4 last time I checked). Almost all of them are rated for a 40,000 half-life. Basically it will take 40,000 hours of being on before the screen deteriorate to the point that half the pixels are half as bright. I'll do the math for you . . . assume that you watch it for an average of 4 hours every day, the screen is good for 27 years and 145 days before half the pixels are half as bright as they were when you bought it. I dunno about you guys, but I doubt I'll ever own a TV that long.
The difference between brand names is the tuners and control electronics, those are the first to cause problems. That's where brand quality comes into play.

Just to be different here, I have two 50" Samsung Plasma's in my house. One is two years old and the other is 1 month old. You will be hard pressed to find an LCD that has the contrast, colors or the ability to display fast moving objetcs like a Plasma. If you watch sports and can handle the "pixilation" and "artifacts" that even the best 120hz LCD's have then go for an LCD. With the current technology Plasma still has the best picture and the most similar picture to the CRT's that we are all used to.I agree the LCD will eventually kill Plasma's but until the newly released 240 hz or faster LCD panel's gain main stream acceptance and come down in price there is no beter value than a Plasma. My new Panel has a filter bright screen and the glare problem that my first Plasma had is virtually gone. As for games, etc. my first Plasma did have some minor burn in that disappeared after some regular TV watching vs. the new set that has none that I have ever seen. As for the 60,000 hours that the manufacturors claim their panels will last that is probably true. It's more likely that some other component like a power supply priced at $500 will fail and make the set not worth fixing regardless of who made it. As for 1080P vs. 720P unless you plan on watching lots of Blue ray Discs (thats the only place you can get 1080P content) remember that all North American HD Tv is only broadcated in 720P and there are no plans to change that. In summary, my advice is go buy a 720P Plasma for the cheapest price (50" for under $1000) you can find. Invest the rest of your money in HD programing and enjoy. At best your TV might last 5-7 years before it goes out on garbage day at which time the technology will be very different and you can go buy something new. I'm not in the TV business but spend alot of time scouring the net for info.
Good Luck!
