If it's engaging only part of the time, you may be right. Take it apart and lube it. Don't use axle grease. You need the white grease doo sells. It's pretty steep, like $19 a tube. But it's important to use a suitable grease. Maybe there's some other grease that's a good substitute, but I'm not aware of it. You can get a parts diag off a doo dealer website to see what to lube. When you take it apart you should replace the star washer that holds the thing together on the center post. You cut the old one off with clippers and push the new one on. You don't want to marr the center post or the whole thing could come apart and farkle the magneto when the parts rattle around behind the flywheel.

Did you put it back together correctly? I only say that because when I put mine back together it didn't work properly then I found out the red piece that throws out to the side and catches , can be installed two ways, and one way is wrong. I can't really describe it.
If you look really carefully at this picture, there are two notches in the red piece to the upper left and bottom. Those guide the green piece's peg to force the whole thing to shift out.
In this pic you can see one of those notches in the red piece on the left side. You have to make sure the green pice is oriented so it sits between the red pegs where the distance between the red pegs is the shortest. Otherwise the green pice won't shift the thing out to catch the flywheel pulley.
Of course this assumes yours is the same as mine. Mine is from an '05 600 sdi.
Hope this helps.

I can't see if there are two pegs on the red part. it appears that the part isn't shifting out early enough. Are there 2 pegs on the red aprt and is the center grey (white) part peg between the two red pegs?

maybe the other peg, if there was one, broke off? I don't have any more suggestions. Good luck.
