I have a 93 500 classic that I am trying to put an xtra-10 rear skid in from a 97 xc. I followed the dimensions that I found on here but I can't get my mounting bolts on the skid to compress to 23 1/16". The farthest I can get it to compress is 24 1/2" when the rear shock is in place and 24" when the shock is not attached. When the shock is not attached the rear shock tower hits the plastic stop. I am sure I'm doing something wrong, please help.
Thanks

Are the springs disconnected? If not, your never going to get the skid in. Post some pictures of the skid and the tunnel, etc.

No, the springs are not disconnected. How do I disconnect them?

The long part of the spring will be almost on a 45' angle going down towards the front of the sled. It will be on a plastic roller behind the wheel. Lift the spring up and bring it out around the wheel and release the tension (be careful with this step and make sure you get a good grip on the spring as it can bite back!). Now bolt up the skid and after all is done, go and put the springs back on. Keep us posted and good luck.

since its a 121 the holes should work, i mounted one that's a 136 and obviously they're a little different. You'll be so happy with the conversion, well worth the time and little money.

DON"T DO THAT!
The suspension will not work. Leave the holes where they are and disconnect the springs and it should go in. Like I said, with the springs connected you will never get that skid in - period! This is what it should look like with the spring disonnected. with the spring off you can compress the entire skid flat.
Good Luck!

Thanks for all of the help. When I loosened the springs it callapse perfectly. I won't have time until later this week or weekend to get the skid fully in place but it looks like it should be easy now. Does anyone suggest using the same front mounting holes or redrill new holes? The new holes would be about 3/16" farther back and about 1/8" higher. Any suggestions?

That close..I would just put it in the way it is and try it out. Make sure you get full range if motion from the suspension. Good luck.

You can try it,but you would be suprised how much a 1/2 inch can make a difference in the geometry of the entire skid. What I would do is try to put the skid in and see what happens and how it works. I would then drill the hole higher and see what kind of difference it makes. The height will make more difference then the front to back spacing. Let us know how you make out.
Good Luck!

Just a warning, the 97 xtra 10 seems to fade the rear shock under hard use compaired to newer x10 skids. be sure to get in the fluff as much as possible to keep that rear shock cool. I cant tell you how many times I thought my rear shock was blown on the 97 skid but soon as I would play in some powder the shock cooled off and worked normal.
