Well I lost all compression on my right cylinder last year on my 440 liquid. I tore it down tonight to find that the right cylinder was OK. I prob. won't have to get it replated but I know I will have to at least get a fresh set of pistons, rings, wrist pins, and gaskets. I talked to the original owner, and found out that this engine has been patched( pistons rings/top end rebuild) TWICE ALREADY. I went ahead and checked the carbs and boost bottle to make sure I wasn't sucking any air to lean my engine out with no luck. Before I rebuild, has anybody here had these experiences with their 440's? If this is a common problem, is there a rememdy for this engine?? Thank you for your imput.

I don't use carbides on my ski's....they never touch the ground anyway!

It has the low compression domes on it, I run 93 octane fuel in it.

How did the piston look on the bad cylinder? Whas the damage in the center, or around the edges? Center=detonation/pre-ignition Edges=lean I'd replace the crank seals while you've got it appart.

The bad cylinder was lean on the exhaust port edge, def got too hot..I'm tearing apart the lower end to check everything else just to make sure I don't have any other problems that I don't know about yet and to replace the crank seals as well..wonder if the sled has some old gas in it at one point, maybe varnished on my jets and that leaned it out??"

I bought my 440x and it was blown to hell, the one piston was very bad, It had a hole in the exhaust port side, or intake i dont remember but it wasnt on the top. The other side was fine, not perfect but usable with a new ring. I have no clue as to what caused it to be blown so badly, i think it was leaking coolant in the cylinder possibly, plus the sled was pretty leaned out with 240 mains when i got it, but like i said the other side wasnt blown up. Just needed a ring. Mine was the pto side that was messed up. I should have pics in my thread in the doo section here. Mine is a 99 zx 440x, but its the same exact motor pretty much.'

I would definitely put new gaskets, and o-rings in it. Gaskets are pretty much a must but im sure the o-rings are getting flattened out by now, mine were. I put the old ones on and it leaked water out the side, put some new ones on and it was perfect. I got my complete winderosa gasket set off ebay, crank seals and all. Its kinda spendy but i offered him like 60 bucks shipped or so for it and he took it. He wanted like 75 plus ship. He prolly has more since he sells sets, bought a set for my 700 from the same guy.

What is the Stock Main Jetting for the 440's anyway? I found out today that they don't have a shop manuel for the race sleds..bummer. Nice sled by the way, I always liked the way the 440x zx sleds looked.

I ran 310 mains in my rev 440, trail converted. If it's been fried twice before I'd suspect something's being overlooked, like a bad crank seal.

I just cleaned some aluminum out of my cylinder as well, after using some muretic acid I found that the cylinder does have some damage done to it. I'm going to have to send it out and get it replated or replaced..I was thinking about using millenium technologies..anybody know about there work quality??

Ive heard they are good. Ive never had a cylinder sent out to a place like that so i cant say i have any experience with them. Lots of people have and say they are good.

Cylinder is back now (sent me a new reman. one) thinking about porting the cylinders before i put it back together....anybody ever done it to their 440? Or know if its even worth doing it to this engine?? I'm worried about loosing too much back pressure..

Ive never done it, to any engine. But on the 440 i dono if id do it. The 440s are already pushing out a bit of power for their size, wouldnt mess with it if it was mine. Especially if you have no experience with it. Ive been wanting to experiment some porting on older engines, will get to that sometime.. I say just throw it back together and dont risk messing it up. The 440 will rip as is. This is just my opinion tho.

Yea i figured..It seems like the ports on the majority of newer Ski-doo's are pretty clean for a factory set-up. Just figured I'd clean them up a little while i had it apart..I'm still kicking myself for not buying a built 800ho with everything for the conversion (1500 bucks) this past summer....oh well, back to painting the sled for now haha.
