I'm running a 617 skidoo motor in a polaris 400 chassis and the dual decker pipes have temp probes and i was just curious what a good operating temp is. From working with jet skis i know the lower the exhaust temperature the more torque you get on low end (assuming what i'm told is true).

jet skis pull right from the bottom ,were you have a 3800-5000 rpm sarting point for sled engines ,usually around 1,200 i would say on the exhaust

When I had twins on a 700 RMK, my high speed exhaust temps were about 1250. Midrange was in the high 1100's, idle was about 600.

That said, the best way to use exhaust temps is to determine what is safe for your sled via piston wash and plug color, THEN look at the EGT display. Placement of the probes can make a big difference between two sleds. What is a safe temp in one sled may burn the other one down.

Great thanks! I'm keeping a close eye on plugs so i don't have a meltdown, but I really had no idea on exhaust temp because i've never had to. Thanks for your input!

When I bought the sled, I didn't know a thing about temps either, even though it had a 3-window digitron. I learned real fast when it starts blinking and says 1600 your 700 twin turns quickly into a 350 single. Oh well, first rides on a new sled are always fun ;) I also got to learn what a "lean burn down" meant!

Sled had EGT's on it already? Ouch, what a lesson

Sled had EGT's on it already? Ouch, first clue. I hope the lesson was learned well. LOL Been there, done that.

Well I got my primary clutch on and took it for a spin tonight... let me tell you it's quite a difference from a 488fan twin! Unfortunately either the temp gauge is out or i have a grounding problem because the needles don't ever move...neither does my temp gauge so now i need to get my ground problem straightened out before an overheat/meltdown.

It's funny,
I'm noticing that more and more of my posts are starting out with something to the effect of BC Dan is right, now do this.....

And now again, BC is right, especially the part about the probe placement making a difference in what the reading says.
Remember that the 2 stroke will run at it's absolute best just before melt down occurs.
Then the richer (cooler) you go from there, the less performance and the dirtier burn.
Aluminum melts at about 1,300 degrees

The last sled I ran the digitron on was a Polaris non valve 700 mod sled.
It showed numbers very similar to what Dan has posted above.
