Trail 4, Gaylord (Johnson Road)

2nd year groomer

I know he wasn't too happy with me taking pictures but come on, I couldn't pass up the opportunity

He said he just "slipped" off the trail

noob... come on, you can't even drive.

Slid off the trail, I'm sure he did, the ground isn't even frozen yet, the mud and grass underneath are slick. Are the trails even offically open?

And its a back dirt road

No mud, no grass.

He just wasn't paying attention or something and got too close to the side it looked like

Yup from a DNR grant if I recall correctly....

He told me he was grooming 7/4 near Dodge Lake Road and if we understood him correctly, he was fibbin a tad. We first saw him right at the 75/trail 7 underpass. Trail 7 is still as bumpy as you know...

He also said the wheels wouldn't even turn. Not sure if its a safety feature on it or not, but I know there was no moving it

He said another tractor or bulldozer type truck was on its way out to help him...

Where you turn onto Johnson Rd from the trail it was ALL dug up and dirt. He said he slid off the trail again...

That would suck, here in SD they use those sno cats or whatever they are called. Luckily out in the hills there is usually a tree for them to winch to when they get stuck.

It seems like it would be better to use sno-cats. Not tractors, snocats are more nimble..

We use snocats for the big trails here, trucks with tracks for the smaller ones, and then snowmobiles with small groomers behind them for the small trails.

As a groomer operator who has been very stuck, things like that happen, even if you are paying attention. They can "just slip". We drove a 9380 Case IH quadtrac over cattails once and buried it.

Plus that guy isn't that bad off.

That was us. That tractor weighs about 50,000 lbs without any snow/ice on it and about half a tank of fuel. It was not fun pulling it out, especially since it was also about -30 degrees F.

Because nobody likes him. He is getting the well deserved B.Henrichs treatment now.

That is too funny. I cant believe he couldn't get out himself though....

If there is ice under the tires 4 wheel drive isn't going to help.

We have had a Sno-trax and a big JD the last couple of years. I was told awhile back that the oldest groomer would be sold this year, I just assumed it would be the JD because we had just got the Sno-trax not that long ago. The Sno-trax spent most of the winter in the shop last year though, due to many breakdowns.

The many breakdown last year were caused, in my own opinion, by the fact that much of the time the groomers were being operated by a landscape or excavating company who had inexperienced operators. It was so bad last year that I feel our trails council didn't want the headache of it anymore, so they let the DNR handle everything this year.

I guess the pics speak for themselves......

Mike

btw - Thanks for the pics, Chris!

Getting the groomer stuck is a rite of passage. There are only two kinds of groomer drivers... those that get stuck and those that are GONNA get stuck! I ran off a straight stretch of trail last year, 8' of snow, slid sideways, could NOT avoid it. Was completely straight. I'm sure glad you guys weren't around to give me all the wonderful support you are giving this poor guy. That's the good thing about grooming in the middle of the week in Oregon... no riders with cameras!

I got it... why don't you all go out and volunteer to help out grooming those trails you all enjoy so much?? Now THERE's an idea! It can be FUN! Even getting stuck!! :D

Remember, there's always someone with zero experience or knowledge who can always point you in the right direction. I love know-it-alls who are so quick to critisize.

Because when you volunteer, people turn you away (especially if you aren't from this area)

You need to know someone who knows someone around here it seems. Even the guy that runs the motel here they tell him no, and he knows what he's doing.

Support? I called another groomer from south to come help him, I offered to get a few more people and try to tow him out, but he said no, he's waiting for his buddy.

Oh well...he didn't seem to happy to be out grooming all the "deep" snow we have here it seemed
