you really should not use anything as abrasive as a wire wheel, you will create a surface that attracts even more carbon. The recommended cleaning procedure is with a polisher and polishing compound or scotchbrite pad.

You need to take the two bolts out that hold the valves in the motor then you can pull out the valve but be carefull not to break the gasket. Once they are out I use oven cleaner and scotchbrite to get the carbon of of the guillotine. It may take a while it gets cooked on there pretty good. You can also take off the plastic cover on the top and use carb cleaner to clean that part.

if you search some of my old posts you'll find a complete set of diagrams and instructions on how to clean the valves. Right from the Polaris manual supplement.

It's also a good idea to replace the stock aluminum valves with stainless steel. The 800 has a lack of cooling around the valve, so there is a greater potential for the valve to suffer heat-related failure. The aluminum ones can be damaged by too aggressive a cleaning...

Dont use a wire wheel dont listen to this guy hes obviously doesnt know what hes talking about, like what proXtreme said u will make a surface where more carbon will build up. There is a coating on them that is smooth u want to keep that.
there should be a tutorial in the HOW TO forum.

When you take the plastic cover off you will find the crown-nut that sandwiches the belows (diaphragm) between the valve and the nut. Make sure that they are good and tight before re-installation........I just serviced mine and they were both loose. I don't know if its recommended but I used med-strength lock-tight on the crown nut to make sure I don't have a valve drop into the piston.
Also clean off the belows real good and inspect them for cracks. I found that at first glance they might look alright but can have very small cracks at the fold point.

When cleaning your valves use a razor blade and some degreaser. That is what I did and my valves came out really nice. Take your time though.

Soak them in Zmax. It's a fuel additive that you can get at most auto parts stores. It breaks down the carbon and they will wipe clean without removing the anodizing. Scrapping them, or using an abrassive is not recommended.

Oven cleaner and a piece of hardwood cut to a sharp face like a chisel. I like to use wood to scrape the carbon off. Oven cleaner softenes it up. I don't even like using a scotchbrite pad. Use one on your aluminum clutch face and see what happens. It scratches. I used a scotchbrite pad to scratch the surface of my cylinders when I rebuilt my engine, it scratches. So why use it on exhaust valves if you don't want to scratch them?

do any others get oily residue inside the plastic cover? I get some there and some drips down the front of the cylinders even with new gaskets. No noticable holes in bellows either.

scratching is bad it gives a pourious surface, they should not be scratched and yes u are probably wrecking the surface. The surface should be smooth so carbon has a hard time sticking to it.

Not sure if I am doing this correctly. The posting I mean. Cleaned ves valves in a 2002 POlaris 600 XC sp. When cruising along about half throttle, seems to die down like it is flooding. Could this be related to the valve cleaning. Seems like I did it correctly bassed on postings. Used a scotchbrite pad and starter fluid.
Thanks

The problem you are seeing with the loss of power above half throttle could be caused by the computer detecting detonation in your cylinders and it's restricting the RPM's on your motor. If you look on your carbs you should see throttle position sensors on the sides of the slides so the ECU knows when you are at or above 50% throttle. The detonation could be attributed to several things though but could be because the motor is getting hot from not enough snow hitting the heat exchangers or low coolant level or both as was my case. The detonation could also be attributed to excessive amounts of Ethanol in your fuel which when combined with water in your tank or present when you bought the fuel can lower your octane by as much as three points. For a hot, high compression engine that most certainly could cause detonation. Ask your local dealer if your model year sled has a computer in it. If this feature is kicking in on your sled they should be able to scan it for codes attributed to this. I have a 2005 Switchback 600 and this has happened to me and it's intermittent and random. It's worth checking in to.
Also, for the record, anytime you can clean the carbon off without the use of an abrasive is the best method to use however be very careful what you use for a cleaner. Fuel additives that are made to remove carbon are the best and will virtually guarantee you won't damamge or etch the surface of the valve. In 2005 Polaris started using Stainless Steel valves and shortly after that started using a Titanium coated valve but quickly discontinued that in favor of the Stainless Steel. Nowhere have I seen it stated that the Stainless Steel has any special coatings on it. One product I recommend is Chevron Techron available at NAPA, Walmart, and pretty much most auto parts stores. Do the research on that stuff. It's made to clean carbon off of intake and exhaust valves and it does it quite well. It's not cheap and a 12 oz. bottle will probably run you around $10 but save it and reuse it for future cleanings. I recommend soaking the blades in this product and then cleaning them with a rag first and then the fabric side of some emery paper and keep rubbing. Obviously there are many other solvents to use as well but some work much better than others. Another good product to use is called Powertune and it's marketed by Mercury Marine. Go to your local Mercury dealer and I'll bet the have this on their shelf. If not, ask them. That stuff is primarily used to clean 2-cycle engines but it is also rated for four cycle motors too. It works real good to clean reed valves and built up gook from using poor qulaity oild and general crap that builds up in normal use.
