Last year we got 1.5 of snow with driffs reaching 3ft!
In MI. My cousin was ridding on the road during the storm and ran into a street sign during a white out. Another dumb sob ran into a parked car during the white out and was killed.
Let it snow, then ride the roads if you can see where your going.

In Michigan it is up to the counties as stated above.
In my county it was unlawful until the mid 1990s. A bunch of us called a meeting with the road commision and the sherrifs dept. We stated out concerns and with compromise we changed the law. We had to pay for all of the signs, a local eat/drink establishment paid the majority. It is legal only on the back side of the shoulder which is basically the right of way. Only if a road (most likely seasonal)was designated part of a trail, could you actually ride in the road lawfully.

Also prior to us getting the law changed we were constantly hasseled by the DNR for riding roads with 8-12 inches of snow on them. No right person would be out in their cars on the roads, but the DNR would cut no slack.....so we got the law changed.

I don't recall ever hearing it was suddenly legal to sled because of a big snow dump

well i know here in mass when we got the blizzard of 78' my father says in worcesterwere he lived at the time there werent anything but snowmobiles on the roads. but that was alot of snow. i guess a couple people died because they got caught on the highway and were stuck there for days.

Bambi would have been a better and shorter movie if he was shot in the beginning with his mother

if a ride on lawn mower takes bumps better than your sled, its time to upgrade

That's good that the 2 groups were willing and able to come to an agreement. Sometimes that's all it takes to change a law.

A little off topic.... Have you ridden the new trail from Starvation Lk to Mancy yet?

I know around here if they declare a snow emergency it is legal to ride on the streets and roads, but i still try and stay off as much as possible. If for no other reason than to keep the police and dnr off my back. No use in drawing attention to yourself if you dont have to. Think snow!!

Around ny you can only go 500ft down the road to get to the trail. But when there is a travel ban and theres alot of snow on the road ill ride the road. Or if i cant ride the trail because of to much snow. But i dont get it when people ride on the road when theres only 8 inches and its only the real light powder. Then there runners wear down to nothing and next thing you know they need new skies.

I can't answer your question, but the instant they close I-94 for blizzard conditions this winter I'm hittin the "big road" with my sled!

You won't be the only one out there Rubi. I've been planning on that since last March when I tried to get out there in a blizzard and couldn't see more than 10ft. I don't care what it's like this time, I'm riding. Might even rip down broadway if the conditions permit!

The only reason I mentioned it earlier in the topice is because I was thinking that the police or any type of enforcement would be a little more willing to allow sled on the road if it was impassable by a vehicle and there was Weather Hazzard or something of that sort.

In most counties of the U.P. of Mich. you can ride on county road and or shoulders, but YOU MUST FOLLOW POSTED SPEED LIMITS. It is NEVER lawful to ride on a highway or intersate in Michigan, I know many deputies and road commision workers who carry cameras that take pictures of sleds on highways to try and get reg. numbers or just pics of sled and riders, alot of times they just have to call in reg. numbers to issue citations. or they just go to the nearest watering hole and compare pics to sleds in parking lots and wait for ya to come out. But as one said earlier, most fo the time in storms they have better things to do.

Yeah, if we get a big one so all the traffic stays home, and they pull the plows, I'm starting at Big Ole, tearing up Broadway all the way to the Interstate, and hanging a right. I'm sure it's illegal, but in some cases I believe in obeying the intent of the law, not the letter.

Last year with all the vehicles stuck on the interstate around Madison the snowmobilers helped. From what I heard they were brining water, food, and gas to stranded motorists on the road. They were stuck there for over 8 hours if I remember correctly.

Things like that go a long ways in public relations as well as the authorities eyes. Besides them people could say they were cruising the highways on their sleds :)

Someone correct me if Im wrong, just going by memory. Unlike some here dont like posting speculative comments.

I have ridden down the middle of the road before, was 15 inches off snow. Had a bunch of people over for the weekend sledding. We went to breakfast like that. People just waived. No way anyone could really leave their driveways. I dont believe it was legal, and was prepared to face any consequences.
