Hey,
I have a 98 Polaris 550 supesport, I was wondering how if possible to get better gas milage. I avg. 100-110 mls pre tank. I change plugs, clean carb (before winter/before summer) and new gas every year. what else can I do to help get better gas milage?
Thanks

Make sure everything is in good shape, and jetted right. The cheapest, easiest, and best way is to not ride as hard. If you ease into it and dont go wide open often then you will save some fuel. But thats also the least fun way to save fuel, but it will probably be the best way.

From the factory the jetting is usually conservative, by this I mean that your 550 fan could be ran hard at -30 degrees F with little risk of blowing due to too lean a fuel/air mixture. That said you should be able to drop one main jet size. (use caution not to run to the bar for a long time during extreme cold) This will gain you about 1-2 mpg. In very warm weather I usually drop the needle jet one clip position, this helps from looseing even more mpg in sticky snow conditions. (I always tape a note on the air box so I don't forget to put it back when it turns cold again) Finally my biggest gain in fuel economy was when I switched sleds with my wife. LOL(very slow driver) Also be conservative with break lever.

Polaris had had problems for years with 550s wrecking cylinders. They get poor mpgs because they jet them quite rich. Even though the plugs and piston wash indecate to go leaner, I would be carefull if you ride it hard.

Anyone can go out and carve around but its the in the woods going uphill, on one ski zigzagin with a leg up in the air givin it all the yank you got just so you can clear the tree beside you knowing your only chance is to stay balls out that parts the men from the groomer chasers.

Make sure your track isn't too tight. I've seen some people that run their tracks way too tight.

Welcome to the world of sledding, where 10mpg isn't unusual. Keep up on maintenance is all I can say.

No, of course not. The only time I go slow is when there's others on the trail comming at me or if the DNR's around...LOL

Yeah I know it's not uncommon, but it never hurt to try to rise your MPG just a little.
