Hey all. Been a while since I posted, but thought you might be interested in hearing about my fall project.
I picked up a 2001 RMK 600 with a wrecked front end, but a good motor, and a 1999 RMK 700 with a serviceable chassis, but a blown motor, no suspension and no seat. Got them both from a friend of mine for $500, he had planned on doing the project himself, but decided it would be to much work.
I brought both sleds over to my buddies garage and we worked on them a few nights. I ended up using the motor, rear suspension, front shocks, wiring harness, brakes, chain and gears, chaincase, driveshaft, track, winshield, handle bars, and tunnel extension from the 01'. The tunnel, bulkhead, bellypan, trailing arms, hood, and everything else from the 99'.
All in all there was a lot of parts swapping. Both were Gen 2 chassis, but I was amazed at the number of parts that didn't interchange. I was unable to use the seat from the 01 because in the 99' the cooling was run under the seat. I ended up buying a nice seat off a 1994 Indy 440. Looks great! Also the wiring was different, the tunnel exention was slightly different, and some other small things.
Overall it went together very well. I had it out for a couple hour ride last sat. and it kept up with my buddy and even did better than him when we got side by side in something a little deeper. He has a 00' 700 ZL and it kind of pissed him of so he went and put a 1.75 track on his sled this week. We'll see
I just got my new SLP pipe and silencer in yesterday, so I will update you on that when I get it installed. Aslo I have a thundershift clutch weight kit that I am excited to get up and running. Sorry no pics yet, but maybe tomorrow if I get out to the shop and get some work done.
The grand total for this sled will come in under $1000 and thats even charging myself a little bit for labor!
I make sh!t out of crap

WOW. That is really....WOW. I think me and my friends could figure all that out but I dont think we WOULD do it. Nicely done way to "recycle"
If you cant fix it with duct tape, tylnol, or band aids your screwed.

Yeah let's see some pics of the frankenstein sled. I will be interested to see what it looks like. If you are interested in putting some new custom graphics for the sled, let me know because I do custom graphics and could give you some good options in various price ranges.

What kind of graphics do you do? How much do they cost, and do you have any ideas for my sled?

My stuff is custom and I do make both sled specific and non-specific graphics. My more high detailed stuff is a bit more expensive than some of my other stuff (because of design time) For the most part my prices are based on the amount of coverage you're after. You could spend anywhere from $75 to $1000 depending on what you're looking for and what your budget is. Take a look at my avatar, that's my XC and I could retro-fit my graphics to work on your XC.
Let me know

Heres the pics. I think it turned out awesome for a ditch beater! I'm planning to paint the screens white, but not much more as far as customising.
I found some damage to the rear mounting point for the right trailing arm. Had to pull the footwell off to get at it. I'll keep you informed.

Did the '99 gen 2's have problems with the rear trailing arm mounts? Both sides were completely broke away from the body. The rest of the sled doesnt appear to have any major damage, I don't know why they would break like that. Anyway, I'll soon have it put back together. Then its time to ride! Just got another 5 inches on top of the 13 inchest we already had.

No one has owned a '99 RMK or XC or any Gen 2 of that year? Anyway, I got her all put back together and buttoned up last night. Finally put the finishing touches on it about 2:30am! Havent ridden it yet, hope I can find some time today.

Took it out for a spin tonight. Engine and clutch mods are very noticeable! The engine does have a stutter at the bottom end, but when it pulls out of it the thing is a rocket! Any idea what would cause that bottom end stutter? Its not what I would call a bog, the RPM's dont fall, but it has to reach about 5500 rpms before it really takes off. I'm guessing its a carb ajustment, but I don't know which one. The directions say that I may have to tune the fuel screw in order to get the best throttle response. Which one is that?

I am confused what you mean by the rear trailing arm mounts, the trailing arm is bolted to the foot rest itself. I have never had the part of the foot rest that the bolt goes threw seperate from the rest, but I have had foot rests damaged to the point that I could move the trailing arm back and forth by hand.
check the welds on the back of the trailing arms, I had one brake clean off last winter.

440 jag- I'm gonna ride the hell out of it! The M-cat is just to long and cumbersome to ride the twisty trails. Also the wife wants to go on few rides with me this year and she should be able to handle this one.
Thanx for the tip crdude I will check. What I'm talking about is the piece of steel behind the footwell that holds the trailing arm mount.

Got a good ride ride on er' today. I removed a spacer in the exhaust and opend up the fuel screw a half a turn and presto I had a blue rocket, no more low end bog! She really impressed me. The clutching seems to be spot on, engages at 4k revs up to 8k and settles in at about 7700 rpm. The pipe manual says the high rpm's should be between 7700 and 8k. Only got to go half the day cause I found a leak in the chaincase, but I got her home and fixed and ready rock again.

You seem to know a 99 rmk inside and out very nice work. Maybe you can help me I bought a 99 rmk 700 for my wife, but she likes the seat and tank setup of a 2000 better. I know you said a 2000 tank and seat won't fit but do you know of another setup that can give me the look of a 2000 model. Also is your track a 144? And if so did you have to put in the tunnel ext. Any help would be great thanks.

I know that the seat from an 01' wont fit without modifying the cooling system. On the 99's the rear cooler lines run under the seat. On the newer ones it runs on the outside of the running board. I dont think any of the new 2 piece (tank and seat) seats will fit. She may want to look at a seat from that years XC lineup. My bro has a 99 XC500 that has a more modern looking and feeling seat, not sure if it will fit though. I have a 136" track, but they did make 144" version. If you have the 144" then you won't need an extension. If it is a 136" model then you will need a tunnel etension.
