Hi Everyone,

Me and my dad and some of our friends were out riding 2 nights ago and my dad hit some rough spots in a plowed field. He was tossed from his sled at about 30 miles per hour. When he landed, his ribs struck a blunt rock and he broke 6 ribs. He is in the most pain I have ever seen and I want to help him. If someone has experience in dealing with this, or any advice whatsoever please let me know. He can't even breathe sometime it hurts so much. Hope everyone has a safe happy holiday.

UH, go to the hospital? Rib injuries are wicked painful. Try not to laugh. Take pain medicine.

Yes hes been to the hospital. Otherwise, how would we have known about the 6 broken ribs. Just trying to make his days easier, and be able to sleep at night.

Thats really bad and another reason why I wear a tekvest everytime I go riding. There isn't much you can do except try and make sure he has to move and do as little as possible. Every easy movement you take for granted puts him in a lot of pain so just try and be as helpful as you can.

A cold beer and a nice fat joint.(Legal marijuana of course) That'll take care of any pain, and it isnt nearly as harmful as pain pills.

Remember to hide all holiday sweets, since this may increase his apetite just a little.

Yeah they gave him vicoden which takes some of the edge off. Sometimes he will just be sitting down in the chair, he won't even be moving, and reallllly severe pain will hit him and he won't even be able to breathe. Seriously I wanna know what the F*CK is hurting him so I can punch it in the face.

First I hope your dad has a speedy recovery. You cant do much for the pain yourself except be supportive. Couple of tips though, make sure before anyone gives him anything they have cleaned their hands! Buy some hand sanatizer for your dad also and make sure he uses it. The last thing you want is for him to catch a cold or the flu. Coughing, Sneezing and weezing will cause great pain with this injury and slow doen the healing. Last but not least do not let him get on a sled unttil the Doctor says he is healed. I made that mistake last year with a broken rib and learned this year as I pulled some rib muscles and will not ride until the 1st week of Feb.

Hope you're old man gets better. As for the pain... Rib injuries will hurt BADLY for quite a while, it just takes time to heal. As for helping with the pain... 2 shots of Jack with a beer chaser always helps me haha.

I hope I die like my grandpa did - quietly in his sleep... not like the rest of the people in the car.

I just started wearing a tec vest. I dont even know its on most of the time.

Probably the best thing you can do to help is make sure everything gets done around the house, so he can rest. Make sure snow gets shoveled, house stays clean.

good luck

Tekvest might have helped for sure.. as others said. Thats why I preach about them.

I broke ribs in my wreck and one cut my spleen in two. Thank god that didn't happen to your dad.

Mine hurt so bad I could not breath. Within days the bottoms of my lungs were dying and I got pnemonia that showed up on an xray. I had to use a breathing thing and hit a certain line on it multiple times a day. I forgot what it was called. It is just a plastic thing.

When I got home, in order to feel a little better I had to lay down with pillows under my knees and many behind my back so I was sitting inclined. That took the weight off my chest. I slept in the same position. Coughing was HORRIBLE and hiccups were the worst.

Try doing the pillow thing so he is laying inclined and such as I described. Doing that for many weeks should help.

I had in home care for a month. It was hard to do ANYTHING by myself. Including the bathroom and bathing. I had my father giving my sponge baths for awhile.
