Remove your snow flap and you will overheat..........guaranteed! When I did the 136" extension, my snow flap was lifted and snow was going under the flap. I have a digital temp guage and was running about 15 degrees hotter. Put a 4" extension on that same day, and motor cooled immediately.

Unless you have a temp guage, you probably would not see how much hotter you would actually be running.

I never overheated last year, running a shorter cooler and no snow flap..

Just because yours did not overheat does not mean it can't happen!

Mine was torn near the bottom from me kicking it when Im trenched in. A couple weeks ago during a cold spurt I cut it down a little. I think it looks decent and it certainly doesnt drag as much or get in my way when Im stuck. Havent noticed any overheating issues yet.

I have overheated my sled twice. Both times were issues with the snowflap. Once, the flap came off and I ziptied it on. The zipties would allow the flap to get sucked into the tunnel. All the snow would fly off the track instead of being circulated into the tunnel. I overheated so bad that I couldn't get the sled to run. The other time I lost the flap heading up into the mountains. I rode all day in deep powder with no problems, but riding across the valley to get home, with the snowflap in my backpack, I overheated again. I had to leave my sled in the street to cool off because it wouldn't run well enough to climb the snowbank to get in the yard.

Wiener boy Jake, We had a ****ing ton of snow last season, and we had a lot of ice, we were riding the bay at my cottage at new years, something that hasn't even been done in about 6 years. There was plenty of ice and snow last year...so none of this low snow and low ice nonsense ya wiener.

Sorry Student driver....

But seriously, getting back to the topic, Jake, your sled may not have over heated because it was set up differently, but majority of the sleds will over heat without a flap on, it helps cool it down....why do you think a lot of the times when guys are jumping they have those pools they use, not only to keep there sliders working, but to keep there heat exchangers cool.

^^LOL! best drawing ever. You got the right idea (kind of) but I agree with those who say the flap is more of a safety feature than anything.

Last year riding with a friend we were going up a step hill i was about 30 feet behind him his track kicked up a rock about the size of my fist. I was thankful that it hit the mud flap first cause it bounced off the mud flap and hit the ground and went off to the right of me. With no mud flap i think i would of need some dental work after.

I'd say its more safety, after thinking about this snow flaps on sleds pre-date liquid cooling on sleds. Not spending anytime around the latest and greatest models. I thought heat exchanger location was limited to the running boards and not going that far back. So I can see where the flap would make a minor differance. But for all us FAN guys running older sled its pure safety.

lol i saw a newer cat oneday riding with no snowflap and when i saw it again that day it was in the moddle of nowhere on the side of the trail. the rider ditched it. overheated? idk but thats the only one ive sen with no flap and it broke down.

and plz use it for safety. remember at full throttle a track can move at around 100 or more mph. a small rock going that fast... might as well point a gun at your buddy behind you.

^^^ i really think it depends on alot of factors. air temperature, snow depth, hardpacked/soft snow, and mainly the sled. im sure most sleds can do it with no problem but i just wouldnt do it... but thats cuz i have a sweet blue flap lol

You need to find out if your state also requires it. In NH if you get caught without one you can earn a ticket and fine. Weater or not your machine overheats is not the question, its what slams in to the person behind you.

i usually cut down the flap and make it shorter. overheating is not an issue since i ride in the mountains but the flap can be a PITA when you get stuck. when in deep snow you want to clear snow from the tunnel not keep it in. When you get stuck and spin the track the flap keeps the snow in the tunnel and skid and just makes the sled way heavier to get out.

i ride where its steep n' deep :P
