whitexc is on to something here, a air leak is very possible, you have confirmed the carb boots, cylinder, and base are air tight? You have the pilot jet circuitry cleaned out, and when you rebuilt the motor, you put the stator mark to the water pump housing mark for 0 degree timing?

All of this has been checked and all is well, and as whitexc says i have been having problems with high idle around 2000 rpm's and have adjusted it to no avail. It seems to fluctuate a lot also somtimes it like 2000 and then somtimes it like 1500, it is very odd. Sounds to me like whitexc might be right on the money. I rebuilt this motor about 1000 miles ago and had no probems untill now!!! I replaced all seals when rebuilt, could a new seal let go this early???

Yes. with it running spray some wd-40 or carb clean or something at your seals and carb boots to see if the idle changes.

ok, I took wd-40 and sprayed around the pto seal and the mag seal as best as i could with no effect on the idle!!! I then decided to install the new carb boots i picked up at Polaris. Once installed I then proceeded to take it for a spin. I could not get it to pop, instead the engine would girgle and bog, kinda sounds like it running rich but i am not sure!! But once i got past the pilot jet stage and into the main jet i had amazing power just like normal. Is this a sign that i need to lean the pilot air screws out, or am i just still a little too lean???

Where are you air screws at now? To me if it were lean it would have been popping into the airbox.

My ol 98 was the same way when I got it. Put in a set of 40's for the pilots (make sure to clean the new ones well!), a set of R1371G needles in the middle clip, air screws were dialed in at a half turn out from seated. From the factory they came I think a full turn or 1.5 turn out. A half turn out was best on mine. I did also put a boost bottle on it. The thing ran like a raped ape and was an absolute freak as long as I owned it. Just sold it this past December, wish I still had that sled, loved it.

1/2 Turn from being seated, I did not notice any popping into the airbox, just bogging and girgling which sounds rich to me. I am going to spend tomorrow afternoon trying to dial her in. Hopefully it works out so i can go riding!!

The boost bottle will help the gurgling, I agree with Josmn, I have a boost bottle, 1371 needles, I believe in the center groove also, 38 pilots and about 1/2 turn out, no gurgling here!

sounds like your on the right track now. The R1371 needles are leaner in the mid range, I was running those but my sled did not like them. Ya just have to play around with it.

My sled has what sounds like the same issue as far as the gurgling...in the pilot circuit or under 5k rpm's, it just doesn't sound happy. It is pretty responsive and once it gets to 6k it plain rips, but it has the burble as well. I installed 40 pilots and am going to tinker with the air screw a bit to see if richening it up will help. I have some 1371G needles in the parts bin but I am wary as I hear they can lean things out a bit. It has been quite cold here and I don't want to take out a new piston/cyl....any thoughts? Sorry to butt in on your thread but it sounds like we are fighting the same battle!

No problem WhiteXc, we can work these girls into shape together!!!
Mine does have a girgle too, but i am thinking it is a tad on the rich side, i am going to play with my air screw to see what it response like when leaned out a little bit. These fluctuations in temperature here in Manitoba really have a guy tuning a lot!!! For example when i started playing with my airscrew it was -40 celsius and then this weekend is forecast to be close to -2 celsius!!!! These dramatic changes probably will throw my settings out forsure. I will keep you updated on what i find works for me!!!! Good luck!!!!

I honestly don't think you have a rich condition. Another thing to look at are the casings that the float pin sits in, are they ovaled out? This is a problem with the keihins. Mine never had this problem but if they are - get a set of pins for a 01 rmk 700. Its a knurled pin which fixes eratic float operation. It is something to look into. SLP also sells powerpacks which is also suppose to fix the gurgling/farting problem. That was my next choice of action if the bigger pilots, adjusted air screw and different needles didnt do the trick. I heard they work very well.
Cold weather tuning is going to be little tougher with that sled on the low end. Mine would only pop a little on start up when it was really cold, would have to play with the choke for a bit. I honestly dont ride much at all if its below -5.

Eureka!!!!!!!!!! I finally figured it out. One of the simplest things that i never did was pull the air screws out and check for obstructions. Well after checking everything else, I pulled out the air screws and found a chunk of black lint on my clutch side!!!!! I crossed my fingers and put it back together, reseted the air screws to one turn from being seated and took it for a run!!!!!!!!! And no problem at all, ran like a champ!!!!!! Just hours before i had to leave on a big sledding trip i found the culprit to all my problems!!!!! Thank-you everyone for all the help and sorry it had to be somthing so stupid that i did not check on!!!!!! I will now never get ahead of myself and check all the simple things first!!!! Thanks again guys!!!

You can move up to the 40 pilot jets with no problem, I did when V-Force reeds were installed

I wouldn't go bigger than the 40s though, I tried the 42s and it was way to much, I went back to my 38s.

So, if you had some junk on the air screw, it probably was a rich condition....nice job and that is maybe something I will look for with mine even though they have been apart numerous times.

Take a good look at the base of the spring, thats where the junk was stuck on my machine!!! Check your carb boots really well cuz it does not take much for them to suck air!!!!

i had a similar issue, my choke cable, Looked like it was working, but upon further comparison, Half the Choke Cable was working Excellent.
The other half was working 50%.
which caused me NightMares!
Also, clean your Carbs, and Clean them very Good, and if you NOTICE any water in the BOWLs, Drain the Gas Tank.
The sled should run the balls.
Make sure you have atleast 120PSI in each cylinder, try for 125 PSI.
