Yes, the CDI DOES control ignition timing...What kind of sled did you have?

I like to ride. Even if you have a Doo/Yami/Cat/Poo, so be it. I bought my snowmobile to have fun, not to tell everyone mine is better than yours. My preference...POLARIS, BABY!

Some race sleds (IE, IQ 440/600) have a timing dial on the CDI box that advances or retards the timing according to what you want to do.

the flywheel and stator plate create the charge and base timing of the spark, the cdi controls the mapping of the timing based on the map installed in it, some companys can reprogram them or if you do research you can find some from different years with more or less timing to them.

Yes cdi controls it. Racers know the "hot box" for most models. In my experience usually the first production year for a given sled usually has the "hottest" cdi set up. Aftermarket cdi tuning and changability is much more specific and can make tuning easier.

Well with all that said, does anyone know a BETTER one for a 99xc700? If there is one.

From a quick Google search it looks like Advent Products, Inc. has or will be making something for 2000-2003 Polaris sleds. Four different user adjustable timing curves, up to 7*...Here's the website

Check them out and let us know if you do anything!
