Ok I am looking for 2nd sled and came across a 1998 XLT Special with 8600 miles! I know but hold on

The thing is absolutely clean and it is owned by original owner who says only put UP Mich miles on it!

I can not believe how clean it is and did a compression test and 3 pulls ALL 120 each, middle was a bit higher..

sprayed around base and seal area with cleaner and not engine rpm change Track and drive system look awesome and there is NO rust anywhere garage kept and only trailered with closed trailer.

He has all original paperwork bill of same sales lititure etc..

I know 98 was the first full production year for the improved 04 XLT motor

Now he is asking 1300.00 with New set of Polaris high fax and New set of Woodys carbides
Along with a Perfect cover!

Any feed back would be great, some reason I just like Triples

yeah sounds like a nice sled. 8600 miles is a lot. if i were you i would plan on rebuilding that motor within the 10k mile mark. just to be prepared. i never knew a xlt to have more than 10k miles with no problem.

never really know how the internals look unless you tear it apart.

$1300 is WAY TOO HIGH. Aggressive chassis right? I would value that sled at $750 max.

Aggressive or Evolved chassis?

It sounds like a good deal. Everyone knows with snowmobiles they are always needed to be maintained to the top in order to keep them from braking down. I would have to say is that the price is not bad but if you don't know this person ask for a lower price and see what he says.

The guys keeps great records on all the maintenance and you can see where everything has been greased and wiped down.

I know the XLT motor wasnt the soild motor that some of the 650's -02 but I think they increased the brgs and case with improved oiling?

Also besides the early crankshaft problems what else has anyone seen in mainly the 1998 XLT motors? I have read post with excess of 10K miles without issue?

120 compression on 8600 motor is dam good in my book, maybe just talking myself into it but it is such a clean sled and yes Aggresive sytle which "only a mother can love" but I have a 96 Storm 800 that is the bomb for me.. But it takes all kinds to make this snowmo world go around!

Polaris 91 yeah I heard that the 93-94's where very dependable! What went bearings? Or broken crank? And did he repair it or replace it?

Anyone have reqcomendations for a good Crank repair shop? I am just getting back into this and don't have a lot of sources as of yet.

Well plan is to just inspect the jackshaft bearings as best as I can and Runnnn it will go for a better price but time will tell..

I know when I use to run 88-89 Indy 650 & 400 they use to eat up jackshaft bearings but have not read alot on this forum about this problem did things get better? I think they still use the 6205 bearings?

I would also say $1000 tops, because of mileage.

The '98 Xlts have the added oiler as well as well as the double wide bearing on PTO
side.

Ok then lets throw this out for opinions and knowledge

When we say too high milege what are the top 5 componets or areas of concern?

If it has not been wrecked then the frame is out?

What wears out? TOP 5

For the engine it's a bearing or a seal that eventually fails. For the rest of the sled, other than normal wear items like slides and wear rods, it's bearings in the skid, jack and driveshafts, springs, shocks, track- you name it. It all fatigues and wears with mileage.

I agree but those also wear with heavy or abusive use, slides, carbides, etc are all maintenance items..

If you put new jackshaft bearings upper and lower and suspension wheels all inexspensive bearings.

As long as the crank has good lube it should run for a long time..

Just understanding the reasons due to the fact I saw a sled this weekend 2001 with 2600 miles and it looked like HELL

Buy it and install a speedo with 3,500 mi. Walla!!! Problem solved.
You now have a super clean, good compression engine with fairly low (believeable) mileage sled. And well worth the money.

the bearings went out and he ended up buying my dads 95 xcr 600 off him because when his crank went out it destroyed the whole motor

No matter what that is a lot of miles. I purchased my 98 XLT Classic (600) 2 years ago when the economy was GOOD. Very well maintained 4200 miles. This has e-start, reverse, Xtra-12. Second season, so far, I have not had to do any repairs, just kept up on maint. He was asking $1400, I got him down to $1200. I don't think with those miles and this economy I would give him more than $900. Good Luck whatever you do.

my 94 xlt was a nice sled, no doubt but they had poor oiling for the cranks and they had bearing problems. i had to replace mine after 4600 miles. it was a clean good runner always tuned at the shop. i done some reasearch on them on many sites and had many opinions exspressed from guys at the dealer that work on these more than most ppl. and the xlt's are good motors but 15k miles is a rare case for an xlt exspecialy with the 93 which didnt have the extra oiler on the crank case. unless there was work done to the crank case for the bearing to be oiled that is prone to failure due to the poor oiling.

like OLD_CLASSIC said this economy and them miles i wouldnt even give him $900 for it. granted the first thing we do is a shock and aww on how good a sled looks. what matters are them internals and how long they are going to last. need to get the best bang for your buck. you can check craigslist and they sell these everywhere from $800 to $2500

the XLT is known for throwing the bearing in the bottom end so just be careful on what you do..........that is a lot of miles but if the thing has great compression all the way across all 3 cylinders I say go ahead and do it...............I just picked up my sled with almost 5k on it..........120 psi all the way across 3 cylinders...........put about 100 miles on her and haven't had a problem yet...........

Well I have a 1995 XLT Special that currently has 7500 miles on it. It has been a dependable sled for me. Never been afraid to take it anywhere. That being said I would say $1000.00 tops on the price. You can buy a newer sled with less miles for $1300.00. The thing with sleds they may run forever or break down the next day you just never know.

I had a 1994 XLT with over 10,000 miles and the engine wasnt touched, the kid I sold it to still hasnt blown it up! I also know a guy with a 1995 XLT and he put 17,000 miles on his before it blew. So I dont agree with your comment.
