hi my friend is having a problem with his xlt 600 triple when he is having it idle it runs fine makes no noise but when it gets up to 150 160 degress it starts to make a ticking/ knocking noise he just put new pistions in it and bored it over 20 thousands checked all the bearing looked good seals looked good to and also when it is making the noise it doesnt affect the running of the sled or the performance at all its just there what you guys think

not a pro but it sounds like maybe the plugs are incorrect. If its making them noises the temp range could be off
life is short. play hard. If your not sweating, your doing something wrong.

Just an FYI, this is my sled...I just joined here. I've been running the same plugs since I've owned this sled. Ran it without the clutch, still makes the noise. Checked the mag, water pump, exhaust, checked the entire sled for anything loose, can't find anything. All this started when I saw the crankcase was damp last winter. Decided to install all new gaskets. Upon re-assembling the engine, found the previous owner had the pistons in backwards. I turned them around, not thinking I would have any problems, and that's when the knock came out. Had a shop check it out and they said that I disturbed the wear pattern on the pistons and now they had to be replaced. Had it bored .020 over and new piston sets installed, hoping this would resolve it...still there. All bearings are in really good shape yet. Engine runs just great. Any suggestions would be helpful..

sounds like piston slap or like the plugs are not gaped correctly or are not the right temp.
do you have the arrows onthe piston pointing to the mag side? sometimes i know guys who put pistons in backwards if the ring gaps are facing the exhaust side even if the arrows are not pointing to the mag side.
it helps the motor have a longer life if the gap in the rings are facing twords the intake side.
what about the bearings that connect the piston to the rod? you replace those? i had one go bad on my xlt when i fried the motor at WOT when my belt snaped. i heard a pinging noise whan i was in the high rpm range.
sorry bout the miss spelled words. i have a wireless keyboard that is junk! cant type fast or it screws up

Pistons are in correctly...ring ends to the intake side. Bearings were all in really good shape with no play in them. I can try a different gap for the plugs. Everybody I have listen to this is stumped...even the pro engine builders. I have put on about 200 miles since this noise started and it just keeps running strong, no excessive vibrations tons of power, it's like a new motor except the weird noise.

wierd..... have you removed the pistons or took the motor apart since you put it all back together?
you said it was making the noise after you turned the pistons around and then after you bored the cylendars out and got new pistons it still made the noise?
if thats the case then it was something prior to puting the new pistons, so it almost sounds like bearings that connect the piston to the rod. it may feel or look like they are in good condition but thats not always the case.
go to this link and look up your sled and go to piston & crankshaft and when the diagram comes up its #7 thats what i think you need to replace or take a look at.

Mine went 50-60 miles of knocking and ticking before the rod bearing went out.

I now have about 400 miles on the motor now and it's still making this noise. Engine runs just great. Lots of power. Had an emergency this last weekend and had to hold full throttle for quite a distance a couple of times and still runs great. Still stumped, because it's not affecting performance or gas mileage at all. Have tried different plugs, gaps, checked timing, checked for anything loose, lost on this one.....still.

Put it on a stand and use a mechanics stethoscope to isolate the area it's coming from. Sometimes not easy but it could narrow the area down a bit.

if it was internal or any of the bearings, something would have broke or blown apart after 400 miles. hmm im gonna ask a buddie of mine what he thinks it may be and i will report it back.

ok i think i have narrowed this down...... do you have the old pistons? ifso look at the crown from the bottom of the piston, there will be a hot spot if the timing s to advanced.
i think 150 -160 degrees is way to much. id first of all stick with factory or oem specs and if you have mods id check with the manufacturer for proper timing adjustments for those specific mods.
here is a link for timing it if your intrested....
http://startinglineproducts.com/technica...Timing.pdf
let me know.... its kinda just like timing a car
timing marks should be on the pull rope side and all you have to do is adjust the stator for the timing.

Yes, I was talking about degrees (temperature). When I put the motor back together, I had previously marked the timing and put it back exactly where it was.
MicahMan, thanks for the timing info...I'll have to try that one of these days, when it warms up a little. I checked the old pistons and they look really good on the underside of the dome ( no discoloration ). Also the paths of flow on the top of the domes look good. I put about 250 miles on it alone just last weekend and it ran perfect the whole time....

ok WOW i was hopeing it wasnt 150 as in the timing. it should b more like 120 deg i believe. well you did say you turned the old pistons around the right way when you got it. how many miles did you drive it after you turned the pistons around and you heard that pinging noise before you bored and put new piston in it?
you might want to take a look and see what your timing is at now. i would try to retard the timing a bit and see if that noise goes away. if it doesnt go away i am stumped.

that happend to my sled. we were looking around and we found aproblem. it was in the secondary clutch. one of the wieghts were broken and not in the center mine does that too. but we looked around and we noticed in the secondary clutch one of the wieghts were broken. and another one was not centerd. this was after we put in new spark plugs and pistons. and this only happens when my sled warms up.

Temp isnt to off but maybe u need premium gas if the timing iseven a little off or compresion has been improved after rebuild. Usually rings will gouge into cylindars if you put in backwards.

Maybe I'm too late for the party but you mentioned that the previous owner had the pistons installed backwards. Is possible that the cylinders and/or the heads have been machined or "decked" at some point? This would increase the compression ratio, cause more heat, and if the tolerances were just right cause the pistons to just touch the heads when the motor was hot. Any idea why the pistons were installed backwards in the first place? If you still have them check the domes on the outer edges for signs of damage-look very close. Also check the skirts to be sure that they weren't hitting the crank.

Hey just my 2 cents. I had the same problem a couple of years ago. Bought a 600 with new pistons & rings installed and it ran like a champ other than a knock and a tick. I ran 600 miles and I couldn't take the noise any more. I tore it apart and could not see anything wrong. I checked for play in the wrist pin on the down stroke. Taped the piston with a soft mallet and found the piston dropped around a milimeter. I pulled the wrist pins and replaced the bearings. Put it back together and fired it up. No more noise and the guy that bought the sled is still running strong.

bdh--sounds like this may be the problem. I've check everything else and ruled them out. When I installed the new pistons, the bearings "seemed" tight yet, but who knows. Found out last weekend that I can only hear the noise at and below 2800 rpm. I'm planning on tearing down the motor this summer and going through it again...hopefully this resolves the noise. I now have over 600 miles on and it's still running great.
