Hey Everyone,

I'm curious as to how many miles I should expect out of my 1997 XLT RMK. My sled seems to have the engine prior to a seperate oil line to the PTO bearing. Currently I have ~4,200 miles on mine and it's totally stock and runs amazingly well. How much more can I realistically expect before I need to rebuild the head on it or I throw a crank? Just wondering if I should get rid of it now while it's running well and before I need to throw a bunch of money at it.

As a side note, I use my sled like a golf cart. It only takes to me good skiing zones here in Montana...I rarely rally it and it was a "wife sled" prior to me owning it.

Thanks in advance!

Jeff

I have heard of people getting well over 10,000 miles out of them, with proper maintainence. I dont' know if that includes piston replacement or not?

whats your compression...my engine has 4700 miles on it and the compressions 140-140-138 so no need for a rebuild anytime soon thats for sure if you use good oil and good gas make sure the carbs are clean and set u should get 10 thousand easy

There are no guarantees- a bearing or seal can fail anytime. However, I have 6800 miles on my 97 XLT special and my wife's 94 XLT has over 7000 miles- both still run strong and have never been rebuilt. I do believe in running a good synthetic oil. You will probably have someone tell you to get rid of it because it's a ticking timebomb ready to blow- don't listen to it. There are probably more XLTs out there still running than any other machine from the 90's.

On my stock '97 XLT SKS, I have over 8500 miles on it right now and never touched the engine. Compression is still 120. I'm planning on rebuilding it this summer though.

Great news! I totally understand that **** happens and nothing last forever, but it seems like if I keep up the maintanence and keep running good oil, I could very well expect another 2-3 thousand miles. I think I will hold onto it...

Thanks for the responces!

Those engines usually lasted 5,000-7,000 miles. The harder you ride it, the more often you will need to rebuild it.

I got just over 11,000 miles out of mine before a rod bearing failure. Shot the rod right through the side of the crankcase. I am pretty sure however that this was a result of over-reving due to am unoticed broken motor mount. I have seen them for sale in the past with 13,000 - 14,000 miles.
