Anyone think it's odd to take your hand off the bars just to Signal how many people are with your group and most of the time you can clearly see how many people are with them, I know it's a safety thing but I think its more of a risk to be riding 1 handed then to know how many people are in the group

I wholeheartedly agree with you. I was riding a twisted narrow trail through the woods up in the U.P., and everybody I met would be signalling. They'd swerve in the ruts when they took their hand off the bars. I tried signalling, but I felt it was way safer to be in control of my sled instead of making some meaningless signal.

and i wholeheartedly dissagree. on a windy trail how often can you see everyone in the group? rarely. and i know it has helped me know to expect someone around the corner more than once or twice, or even ten times.

I feel using hand signaling is a must. I also understand not using them when you are on a lake or super long straightaway, but on a winding, twisting trail? An absolute must! As for control issues, an operator should not be going so fast on a winding twisting trail, with other snowmobiles approaching, that control would be an issue.

Hand signals are just a good habit to get in. When I see hand signals being used, at least I have the impression they aren't thinking of just themselves but the safety of others around them. Those people I pass that don't give hand signals I naturally think either they aren't experienced enough to know about them, they don't care about anyone else but themselves or they're going to fast for their skill level. Those sledders give snowmobiling a bad rap. Use hand signals, it's shows you're a responsible sledder.

I use them when I can. If I feel at the time it's safe enough for one hand I will. You should expect traffic at all times and not rely on others hand signals to be safe. Thats what I go by. But if they are used it is nice just to be sure.

I use hand signals too, but the other day I was riding when it was really cold and I had mits on, not gloves. So I couldn't signal

Its very rare for me to meet another sled on the trails around here but when I do I just slow down. Hand signals are useless here since I doubt many people will know what they mean. They would probably just think I was waving at them.

theonly time i use signals in the the trails, they are definitely a safe way of communicating to other sledders to be cautious as to what is coming at them. we all know there are "speed demons" on the trails and if they don't signal back to me thats fine at least i know i tried to warn them that i do have people behind me. no one wants to go home in a body bag after having some fun on the trails. as far as on the lakes or high tension lines you can see how many are behind me.

Def. need to use them, as Raptor700rBronson said if you can't take your hand of the bar for a couple seconds, you need to either slow down or find a new hobby. Many times especially during the weekend days I'll find a group of sleds and there is ALWAYS one rider in the back of the pack losing the group he's in. And as soon as you hit the throttle to get going, here he comes putting around the damn corner in the middle of the trail. But then again that's why I ride late at night whenever possible, less traffic

We always use signals, both on our sleds and when trail riding our ATVs in summer. We slow down considerably when passing other sleds/quads as we don't know the other persons ability, intoxification level, or machine maintenance. Slowing down a bit makes it much easier to signal.

I don't get why you guys that don't can't just slow down to unless your in a situation like mjay and nobody will no what you mean i always do as for those terrible riders that do like 15 in the middle of the trail they should get off the trail and ride on the back with somebody cause the last thing i want to do is go around a corner going 30 and hit a retard in the middle of the trail with my ski and crash.
empty a bag of skittles in the toilet and flush it;s like watching a 5 second nascar race

I agree partly, its dangerous to ride one handed but it is helpful to know how many peopele are coming down the trail, especially in the turns. I try to do the signals, but i don't do them if i can't ride safe while doing it.

We also use hand signals on trails. If its a big, wide, straight trail i usually dont and same on a road. On the trail we use them so i know if ill have to worry about other sleds. I usually ride in the middle, and the last trip i was riding with my brothers friend for the first time. He was leading most the time, and i was behind him. When he would go around a turn or get up on the top of a hill he would sometimes put his right hand up. At first i didnt know what he was doing, then i would see sleds coming at me. He was signaling that there were other sleds coming down the trail, so i would tap my brakes and slow down to let the person behind me know. And i agree, if you cant control your sled with one hand, slow down.

The one problem with the finger signal. How do you do it with Mitten type gloves? I think a flip of the headlight to let others know of more sleds.

Slow the hell down when passing another rider or group, then its much safer to take your little hand off your bar and raise it.

we ride in a pretty big group when riding with the families, up to 12-15 sleds, we put one of the most experienced riders in the front and another as the last person, they are the only ones that signal--the front guy flashes full hand twice for more then 10 riders, and the last guy goes closed fist to let you know we are all by. I think it helps to let people know, especially on twisty trails where alot of people go to fast to begin with.

That's how I felt first time on the trails (had never been on a trail until I was 17 maybe...no trails where I am here). Maybe 1 in 5 would signal. We just figured they were waving, so we'd wave back. After a couple hours on the trails we realized that the guys with 3 fingers would have 3 sleds behind them, and so on.
After it dawned on us that they were signaling, we started doing so also. We noticed and used it a lot more out in Yellowstone when you'd get the groups of trail riders out there. And I've never had any problem with control. We always slow down for oncoming sleds, so maybe that's part of it.

I like the signals and think they should be used. I dont think its that hard to ride a sled one handed as long as you arent blazing the trail.
