so i recently bought a set of pipes for my rmk and lately I had been hearing a rateling or vibration noise, and it was due to not grinding the shock tower bracket enough. the bracket eventually dented the pipe about a 1/4 inch. I guess im just curious if the dent is witholding and performance and if it could be removed. I think i could get a tool in there and try and pop it out does anybody have any suggestions?? any help is appreciated!

I wouldn't think a little dent like that would hurt anything.

I've seen pipes reapired a few different ways. Some are easier than others, and some are really dangerous.

The best way and safest way IMO, it to drill a 3/8 hole on the opposite side of the dent and use a drift punch to tap the dent out from the inside. This requires a welder to patch the hole you drilled. If you have a welder, go this route. Be sure to grind away any ceramic coating from where you are going to weld. It doesn't like to be welded.

Another way that is a bit more dangerous requires that you plug one end of the pipe, fill it with water, plug the other end with a plug that alows you to apply air pressure into the pipe, and then presurize the small pocket of air inside the pipe VERY slowly until the dent pops out. Still dangerous because the dent popping out may rupture the wall or a plug may blow out taking someone out.

The other way I'm not even going to tell you, because it essentially makes a pipebomb out of it if it goes wrong.

I've seen some pretty mangled pipes on some sleds, and if your dent is only 1/4 deep, I would leave it alone and just ride!

Me and my dad have fixed o few pipes over the years. We drill a hole in the dent and pull it out by heating it and slammig something into it from the inside. Sorry I cant remember what we used but then we just brazed the hole shut. I think ProjectRMKs idea with a punch might be easier tho.

If you know someone that owns a body shop they should have a stud gun. It tack welds a stud to the dent and the slidehammer tightens onto the stud and pulls it out, only take a couple of minutes.

In the old days guys with fatty pipes who wanted a higher rpm pipe would hit them with a lead mallet and dent them! I'm not joking!!! Usually the dent is put on the fattest part of the pipe closest to the muffler.

Dent won't hurt it. But if you really want to fix it, I've done it like his: I've plugged both ends, one with a air chuck in it. Then I heat the dent and add air to it. The other way I've done it on bad pipes is to cut em in half a the weld, heat the dent and bang it out and weld it back together.

thanks for all the good advice! I know if im going to worry about it so much right now, it mayturn into a summer project if im bored, but if i do i think i will try my new slide hammer, havent had the chance to use it yet.^^ haha i like the possible pipe bomb idea that could be bad lol!
