Okay here is my dilema, got a 96 XLT SP with a 97 bottom end (4th oiler) SLP pipes, ATACC. It will idle at 2000 rpm then once you go to take off it boggs and will almost die, however, if you flip the choke to half way real quick and then accelerate it will take off and run great. BUT when you stop it will be idleing at 4000 rpm. The other thing is I had to back the air screws out to 1 3/4 for it to run good and SLP's tuning says 1/2????? Carbs have been cleaned, both clutches rebuilt. This thing is giving me nightmares. I need some serious help on this one guys. Any inputs??? Could this be a crank seal?? I have sprayed cleaner on it while it is running and no difference.

Could be something within the primary clutch. My old indy was doing the same thing. I never had to choke it but it would bog down on takeoff then catch up after a few seconds. I guess it was the spring in the primary.

having to choke = have to richen = lean condition. Air screw = controls air flow from 1/8 - roughly 1/2 throttle. 1 3/4 turns on air screw = too lean = having to choke.

Take apart your carbs, clean them all, set them to SLP specs. check all your carb boots, spray ether around your crank seal while idling and look for an indication of a rise in RPM = bad seal. I would start with the carbs though...Do you have any other mods other then the 97 base?

I looked at it more yesterday and there is an oily film where it looks like the crank seal is possibly leaking. I sprayed carb cleaner behind it while it is running and it makes a notable difference in how it runs. I did pull the plug on that side and it did not look lean? I think I will replace the seal this week and see what happens.
