Hey everyone I recently moved from South Dakota to boulder, co. and me and my roommate being the "go big or go home" sucker's we are bought brand new 09 Yamaha Apex MTX's. So here i am, having only ridden once in my life and it was on trails on like a 600 rmk, with this big bad ass snowmobile and NO flipping clue on where to start. I bought all the snowpants, jacket, base layer, gloves hat helment googles boots, trailer. Now i need to know what else, i've been told a backpack, but what do i put in the backpack? I've been told i need spare parts, what spare parts? Do i need this beacon and probe i've read about for the Rockies? We plan to go to steamboat springs in a few weeks, where do i go, just hit the trails and then find some hills to highmark? What do i need to know about highmarking? Is it easy to find a club to join? Sorry about all the questions but i dont want to be "that guy" who thought he knew everything and just go balls deep into this whole deal and get ourselves killed the first time we go out. Anybody with a little time to write down some tips and helpful hints would be GRRRRREATLY appreciated!!! THANK YOU, Jason

Ok, put your snowmobile in the back of a flatbed and bring it to 990 daniels road, in Albany Vermont, ok? then i;; trade you for a real sled- 1986 indy trail 488
just joking.
man you're gonna get a lotta stuff for this- ill hang back to see what people say before i start.
bottom line- enjoy yourself. Don't flip your sled going too fast around turns. Learn to move your body weight side to side as you turn. Just learn to get the feel for it. good luck, and welcome to the sport. Consider me your ally!

Welcome to SF. Somewhere on this site there is a post with a list of stuff
that the Mtn. riding members put together that they wouldn't ride without.
I'm not a Mtn. rider, but can list a few of the basics that I remember.
Spare plugs
Spare belt
Nutrition bars
Solar blanket
Good rope
Non caffienated beverages
Avy beacon
Avy probe
cotton balls w/petroleum jelly
extra lighters/paper
cell/sat. phone
GPS
Sure theres more, others should be chimeing in soon.
When you get that Apex on the mountain, be sure to post pics for us flatlanders!!
If you're not
livin on the edge,
Then you're
takin' up space!

Sioux Falls, i see you live in Springfield, is that by choice? or did the judge have something to do with that? HAHA (the state prison is in springfield) My mom told me the weather today was -30 when she woke up!! HAHA SUCKERS!! :) Wow already 5 posts to my question, thats so awesome guys, really appreciated, keep the advice coming. I think i'm going to meet up with some of my airplane-buddies from back home when they come out to snowmobile next month, get some hands-on help and advice, but i still love anything anyone has to offer!!! ^^Haha yeah i grew up in Springfield. Both my parents work at the prison so i hardly even think about it anymore. Had one escape earlier this year but he got caught. There is more people inside the prison than there is in my town . I currently live in Tea and attend school at Southeast Tech.
Forgot to mention, welcome to the site! A lot of good info and people here.

Google clubs in your area and join one that fits how you want to ride and join it. Hell join 2 or 3. Beacon shovel and probe are a must

Dont make your own path up a tree or rock filled hill, and vise versa dont make your own path down a hill you dont know. Find some open fields and clear hillsides and let yourself get accustomed to riding in that sweet sweet sugar. The first couple of times my friends and I went out west we got into some tough spots. Mainly because those tree covered hills and rocky valleys look so enticing. How do we get down from here!? How did we get down here!?
I make sh!t out of crap

Definately the beacon, probe, and shovel.
Take an avalanche class, they are an absolute must.
Don't ride alone, carry some tools and a spare belt.
Carry spare gloves, water, food, the yellow can survival kits they have in the sled shops are a must (then hope to not have to open it), I like to carry spare goggles for when the first ones ice up, knife, matches/lighter, I carry a couple 15 minute road flares because with them I can start a fire even when everything is soaked (and I hope to not have to),
Spare plugs for sure, I carry a bend -o-light to be able to re-jet machines and check the wash on the hill (wifes and spare sleds are still carburated)
Some basic first aid stuff to be able to bandage or splint about anything, A few pain killers to be able to get badly crashed people out better. Folding saw, I'm sure I'm probably forgetting some as I'm just now hitting the morning coffee.
I'm ex-military and by habit/training do try to stay very prepared.
When riding off trail, it's sometimes better to go up hill from the trail, as opposed to dropping down off the trail and not being able to get back up.
From there, find a club, ride lots, and have fun.

Your gonna roll it when you try to start high marking, ride around in the deeper stuff and get good a carving and staying on the thing befor you go racing up a steep hill.

Yeah, not sure what his numbers are, he JUST got out, he just got off his 2nd tour in Iraq a week ago, he still freaks out about semi's pulling up beside us on the freeway, thinking its a HUGE BOMB!! He's still leary of places with lots of people in once place being crazy and yelling and what not, thinking its a militant coming out and shooting at him! haha hes good though, just need a little acclimation to the real world!!! I'm sure he'll come to love it it very soon!!!
