I was out on the weekend with my 2004 XC 800 and after i filled the machine with 91 octane i switch the ignition switch to Premium fuel. As i was riding the temp light started to flast 4 times then stop and repeated over and over the 4 flashes. I thought first it might be a cooling problem but after checking eveyrhting it was clearly not that. does anyone know why the light flashes only when the ignition is on the premium fuel setting?

thanks

I've got an 03 700 VES, and if I'm going slow not enough air flow cools the engine and/or on hard packed trails it will over heat(TEMP flashes); going slow. I've never really used the premium fuel option, does it even change much, what does it do?

It changes the ignition timing for more power with the premium fuel.
when i turned the switch back to reg fuel the temp light never came on
i thought there might be some sort of code it is trying to tell me

In premium mode the timing is advanced 2 degrees at higher RPM's vs. regular mode. I don't know what is wrong with your sled though.

"Detonation Elimination Technology (DET) protects the engine from damage by sensing detonation's vibration signature in the cylinder head and retarding the timing in three-degree increments until the detonation stops. It then begins advancing the timing, one degree at a time, until it is back to full operation. Operators will see a warning light flashing on the dash if the DET activates. Detonation is most commonly caused by improper jetting, poor fuel quality or changes in elevation."

This is a copy and paste from an article written by American Snowmobiler Magazine on some of the features for 2004.

i thought of that but figured there was a DET light that would of flashed and the engine would of lost power but it didnt lose any power and the temp light was flashing, i guess i will have to call the dealer/read more of my shop manual.

On my 05 XcSp, the temp light will flash when the DET is activated. AFAIK there isn't a DET light on these sleds.

I was guessing that was why the light was flashing, thanks for the info, now I need to find out why it was, maybe bad fuel or something
thanks again

I have an 04 Pro-X2 that the temp light started flashing when I am WOT and let off, and sometimes at a constant throttle. I have owned the sled since new and this is the first I've seen the light. With some research I agree it is the DET kicking in. I don’t know why though, and it is driving me nuts. It has gradually happened more and more, and now I can get the light on within 3 miles. I DONT notice any performance hits and I can turn 8100 RPM with the light on. I have gone through 5 tanks of gas from 3 different gas stations, so bad gas is out. I've had the premium/regular switch on premium/regular gas combinations, no luck. Switched back from NGK to Champion plugs nothing.

Some sled History: I have put on 1200 hard riding miles this season. Trail conditions are hard packed and not much loose snow, but ambient temp has been cool (-7 to 10 degrees f. the times I've been out). I had moved to Colorado for a year so I had it re-jetted and clutched for 10k altitude. When I moved back to Green Bay, WI this December I had the jetting/clutching set back to 0-3k altitude. I am starting to wonder if the dealer really put the proper jetting back in. Also I am questioning the CDI/DET module is working right.

I asked the dealer about it, but when I had to explain to them how a flashing temp light is DET and not a temperature issue (solid temp light) I got a blank start and heard nothing but crickets and tree frogs.... Then when I asked how they would test the CDI/DET unit they said you can’t and need to replace the unit for $300 to test! At any rate I don't have any confidence in them anymore so any help would be appreciated.

Our problem seems the same, I havent had a change to work on it this week (the sled) but changing the module might be my/our last option. I had a 2002 700 XC and never once did that flashing light come on. I managed to find the high perofrmance manual i bought from Polaris and will be reading all i can find this weekend I will keep you posted.

I was going through the sled today and noticed that the torque stop had broken and when I rev it the motor is rocking quite a bit. I thought WOW I got it.... $14 bucks later I was back on the trail and actually had the light on in a couple miles The DET actually retarted the motor noticably this time. I couldn't get over 60. I shut her down and restarted and ran 120 more miles. I saw the light flash 3 or 4 more times through the trip. So... tomorrow I think I'll pull the air box and go through the fuel system the best an amature can. I want to pull the jets and inspect them to make sure they are 440's and also there is no blockage causing a lean mixture. I am also going to , gulp, do a compression test and hope nothing is up there.... After that I'm probably going to bring it to another dealer. Ouch.. my wallet hurts.

well i think i have it sorted out I now have confirned according to the Polaris manul athe engine revs to 7900rpm +/- 200 like it should, carbs are and were set on the money
I was running a BPR7ES plug and it calls for BPR9ES (cooler) so I had a set os 8's and tried them over the weekend.
The manual says the temp light can flash more than one way to show if either the sensr is bad or if the DET is activated, problem is trying to watch it as your bouncing down the lake at WOT.
I also noticed it looses a couple hundred revs at WOT on reg switch setting, interesting!
Unfortunately I only get to play with it on weekends when I am at the cottage.
It could as simple as running too hot a plug or the sensor is acting up. I got a weeks vacation next week to finish sorting it out.
