My sled has a new issue. It stays running even when I turn it off. I have to choke it out.

It is dry under the hood. I thought maybe the stator wires were getting wet but that is not the case.

Any ideas?

I had that happen when my carbs were freezing on my Powder Extreme. Both kill switch and key wouldnt kill it. How cold was it? Real powdery snow?

My XC did this when I was replacing some jets in the carbs. I guess while farting around under the hood I unplugged the ground which is directly connected to both the kill switch and the ignition. The machine would not turn off with the kill switch or the ignition because it wasnt grounded. I founf the ground, plugged it back in and bingo.

Well my problem is still going on. When the sled is "cold" it works fine.. but as soon as it warms up (10 mins) it starts the problem.

When I turn the key off, it seems that it cuts off a cylinder or two but not all three. I have to choke it to flood it and kill it.

Do you have a wiring diagram for your sled. Turning the key off, basically just completes a ground circuit. Follow the hot side of the key switch to the ignition system. It sounds like there's a problem there. I hate intermittent electrical problems.

Its most likly an eletrical issue sounds like wiring issues with the key it self could just be loose wires
Pull you ignition out and see if thats the problem
Try unpluging your killswitch too because there is a safty switch inside that seems to go bad thats what i had to do to my ZR

I had this happen before with an old air cooled ElTigre 5000. What happens is there are hot glowing bits of carbon that keep the engine "dieseling". With you gloves on when this happens, pull your plug wires off. if it keeps running, this is your problem. I assume it would be caused by a rich delivery of injector oil and also I would switch oil brands. I bet your plugs are black.

Yeah my zrt did this. I replaced the ignition switch, kill switch, and wiring harness and after i did that it worked fine. Check your connections from the igntion and kill switch to the wiring harness. It could be loose or just plain dirty. Thats probably your problem. Because if your igntion and kill switch are both doing it then its probably that connection where they connect into the wiring harness.

Matt did you get your problem figured out? I was wondering if it was dieseling like I thought or if it was electrical. Let us know.

I cleaned all connections (removed dash) and problem is still there. Diesling is not the cause as when I hit the kill switch.. it killed 1 or 2 cylinders. I looked on many forums and it was almost always a bad CDI as when it craps, it doesn't kill all cylinders, just a few.

I bought a used CDI from a forum member. Sometimes after many years these CDI's can cause this issue so hopefully this should fix it.

It should arrive tommorrow and I will get it installed. Might as well since its going to be even warmer tommorrow.. 55!!

It is definately a grounding issue. since it is a normally open system. Check the engine ground strap. It goes from the recoil fastener to the frame near one of the muffler isolators. It is common problem on the ZRTs. The problem with the old free air 500s was due to the same ground wire. Except that ground starts at the stator and the connection always failed.

Grounding issue. My friends 99 ZR 700 did this and after inspection we found one of the grounding wires was broken where it mounts to the engine. (the ground coming from the handlebars)

Definitely an open wire somewhere. Check all grounds. When the key is off it grounds it out so if there is a break or whatever in the ground, turning the key off will not do anything.

So did you fix it? I'd use a multimeter and just poke around the wiring and find out what is open when it should be closed, or closed when it should be open. That's how I got my sled to start in the first place...the wiring was all fubared so I just ran new wires.
