A while back I was cruising google earth (or something like it) and ran across a 'town' named Winter up in the area around Isabella (south east of there). I have been completely unsuccessful in finding any information on it. I've sent an email to an info email address from Lake County's website, but haven't received any response yet. Just thought I would see if anyone in there area might have information. Any information. I don't know why, but ever since I found it on the map, I've had a fascination with it. I guess what really gets me is the fact that it's listed on Mapquest, but it says, "There are 1.6 miles between your ending location and the end of your driving directions. Use local maps to get from the end of your route to your ending location."
Mapquest Info
So, who has information about this place? What is/was it? I suspect that it is either an old mining or logging camp and is probably completely gone by now... or if there is anything there, it's remnants of shacks with trees growing through them. I just need to satisfy my curiosity. I'm hoping that one of these days I'll be able to get up there and just hit the trails on the sled and go find it myself.

Based on a google maps satellite view, it isn't anything. I've probably ridden that road on the sled before, and I'm sure Grease, 2sewings, and wallygator have. Could have been an old logging camp, thats about it.

If I remember right, it was the logging town up by Isabella lake right next to the BWCA. Don't quote me on it though. Shane 69?? might know, he lives in Finland.

A correction to my original post... Winter resides south WEST of Isabella. Guess I was tired when I wrote that up... that's my excuse :)
It surprises me that it shows up on a map if it isn't anything or has no significance. Curiosity sucks.

East of that lake. It shows Stoney River Forest Rd. goes right through/past it.
Further east is Murphy City on Hwy 1.
I had a thought last night while I was rolling around the warehouse on my forklift at work. I want to purchase that chunk of land... Then I can tell people that I OWN Winter in Minnesota! LOL

All that is in that area now is lots of tree stumps and swamps.
I know exactly where your looking at. It's only about 6 miles from the Knotted Pines.
The Stony river road is a minimum maintenance road, which means it only gets plowed in the winter if they are logging off of it which they have been for the last few years.

I seem to recall there are a few places in that area that are slightly higher than swamp elevation. Unfortunately my Mapsource cd's will not open properly tonight, wtf!
Grease, also seem to recall some old logging in those sections. I'm going to dig out the old Delorme maps later. This town sounds the same as Sawbill Landing!!!
It's all about the ride to get there, the destination doesn't matter!

Here are a couple more pictures I captured from Google Earth.
If you zoom in far enough (on Google Earth), you can see that there is a powerline trail just south of Winter that crosses over Stoney River Forest Road. The one picture looks like there has been some clearing done around the area. It looks a little sparse on tree coverage. Of course, that might have to do with a 'town' of sorts in the past... or just logging efforts.
I'm a little put out that no one in the offices of Lake Co has seen it in their hearts to respond to my email asking for information. Then again, they could still be trying to find something for me... or they may just think I'm off my rocker! LOL

Scott--I think this calls for a ride into this area and pictures...just over a mile past the tracks it looks like. I'm thinking your going to find some coordinates?
Once you do...then we all can say we have seen winter, been in winter and snowmobiled in winter!

I did some Googling earth myself...coordinates are:
47*31'38.06"
90*29'25.09"
After looking at the pictures, I know I've been there...after hunting all over that area where my dad and I harvested a moose off that powerline...West side of the Stoney River Forest road.
I shot a moose in winter!

Your coordinates look the same to me. To get decimals of a minute, you have to divide the seconds by 60.
91*29'25.09" = 91*29+(25.09/60)' = 91*29.418'
Which is about a foot away from 91*29.427'
6706 x (.427-.418)/60 = 1.006 feet.
I'd say if you're within a foot of Winter, it's probably still Winter.

Looks like I've turned this into a mission for more than just myself LOL
Scott, if you get there, let me know what's there... if anything. I'll still have to get up there myself one of these days just to satisfy my need to see it. I have no idea what got me so obsessed with it. Thanks for the info link. I'm gonna go check that out now. I'm still waiting to see if someone from the Lake County offices gets back to me with any info.

Markus would be the one to ask, thats for sure! My topo software shows the Stony River road to be an old railroad grade down to Two Harbors to the south and up past the Sawbill Landing to near Section 29 Lake road to the northeast.
I searched for "Minnesota Ghost Towns" earlier today, going to try some type of search for "abandoned railway stations" next
I'm going to figure this out

Seems to me Ironlung you might have pulled the old 440 on the trailer up to the Knotted Pine thru that section a couple of years ago

Well, I've officially made myself look like a whack job to the Recorder and Auditor's offices in Lake County, MN. No one could come up with anything. In fact, I had one guy almost pissed off telling me that "There is no Winter in Minnesota!" I almost wanted to tell him he should look out the window and tell me if he sees snow out there. LOL
They basically told me that unless I had an address or a legal description of the property that I'm interested in, they couldn't help me. I guess I need a platt map of the area so that I can give them the legal description. Or, one of you fine folks may run across the owner of the property and be able to shed some light on the subject.
And I JUST got an email response back from Matt Miller, Deputy Assesor for Lake Co. I forwarded him the URL that you posted Scott. Here is what he had to say about it...
Mr McCoy,
We did finally find a reference to “Winter” on one of the USGS quad maps (the “Isabella” map), it is south of Jay Cee Landing on the DM&IR railroad line, almost directly west of Baptism Landing, and we’re guessing it is probably either an old logging camp name or railroad section house name. There is no town plat for “Winter” and as far as that area being a “populated place”, I think some census taker got their info wrong, unless by “populated” they’re including the deer and the birds.
The land ownership in the area is almost all US Forest Service with a couple hundred acres of Marlow Timber Products (formerly Potlatch) in the near vicinity. Some of the Marlow land may have trail access to it, or may have been accessed down the railroad grade.
If I can find the name on any of the USGS quad computer maps we have access to, I’ll try to make a .jpg copy that I can forward to you, but I can’t make any promises on that.
Matt Miller
Deputy Assessor
Lake County
So it would seem that there is a high probability that it's owned by the US Forest Service. Maybe they'll find more info for me and be nice to forward it on.

I did see the Jay Cee Landing on my topo also. I think Matt hit it on the head as an old station of some type.
