Since I was able to locate Winter on my GPS and my Delorme map for Minnesota, this has turned into an obsession with me to find more info
So far I have been able find out the Stony River Road is an old abandonded DM&IR railroad bed. Greasemonkey knew that all along but I didn't. I have managed to find a railroad map that showed a split in the route at that same place so I am thinking it was some type of layover station or possibly a water stop for the old steam engines that they used to run. Water table is pretty high in that area so that would make the most sense.
Stay tuned, I will get to the bottom of this
It's all about the ride to get there, the destination doesn't matter!

You seem to be quite the researcher. I thank you for taking on the mission.
I still have not heard anything back from the Forest Service, but there was a weekend involved. Maybe I'll hear something this week. If I don't, I will do what I did with the County offices... I waited a week, then I called them. It's a little hard to ignore a phone call than it is an email.
I also saw what looks like it was a split in the railroad at that point and I'd have to agree with your assumptions about the station. I really want to get up there, but I don't think I'm going to be able to take any vacation from work the rest of this season. We're pretty busy around there and it doesn't look to be slowing down for at least the next month or 6 weeks. I'm happy I still have a job, but damn I hate not having any free time for riding!

Just got the low down on Winter Mn.
This "gentelman" (and I use that term loosely ) literally knows every single inch of the Isabella area so I will beleive him. The stories he tells us about that area all of the time are priceless.
All we have to do now is go to the GPS coordinates and say that we have been to Winter Mn.
Grease,
Winter was a landing site like Jay See and Kelly Landings. Whyte was going to have a sawmill site there but moved it farther south on the old DMIR grade.

Dam you Grease Was that from Dan as in "Dan and Kelly"? If it is, he would be the man that would know. Hopefully I will get a response to that e-mail I sent last night.
By the way, I already have the co-ordinates loaded in the GPS
We might have to come up with a sign or something along that line!

So what is meant by "landing site" ?? What was landing there?
What was the area where we stopped during our first SF Group Ride. It was a really large clearing and I heard someone say that it used to be a logging camp or something like that. The only thing I remember about that is I had returned a call to my wife and found out that my cousin had been arrested for murder while we were sitting there.

A landing site up there is a stagging area where the logs are brought out to a clearing and cut to size and loaded onto trucks now. Years ago, everything was loaded onto trains and hauled down to lake superior to be shipped out. Look up logging in the northeast arrowhead region in the 1800's on the web. Lots of interesting history about that area.
