Lets see those crash pictures! No one likes wrecking their snowmobile but everyone loves hearing the stories! I unfortunatly dont have picture of mine but it was a wicked crash!
I was just east of Newberry in the Upper Peninsula heading towards St. Ignace. It was early morning and the sun was shining right in my eyes. 8 inches of fresh snow on the trail made the powder coming up from my cousin's snowmobile made it impossible to see. Going about 60mph I got to close to him and sure enough a sharp right comes up and I go off the trail into a ditch. The crash caused me to bend my right trail arm on my 98 SRX 700 triple. The snowmolbile then leaned to the right now because of it. To make a story short, I was going around a left hand corner at about 50 and the snowmobile rolled to the right side. The right ski got caught in the fresh powder and the snowmobile did 3 cartwheels in the air. I luckily rolled off into the ditch and was unharmed. But yeah it took me a few hundred dollars to get that catastrophy fixed.
Lets hear yours!
Sorry if you seen my post of the same exact thing in the Sled Shed forum. Im new to this page and forgot there was multiple forums. I figured this forum would be more suiting to the thread im posting.

Well mine's not as extreme as that. I put a gas can between my legs to go rescue my brother. Took a right turn, throttle pinned to the bar, and blam-o. Bounced off one tree then head on into another. My father and I straightened the sled out with a chain come-along and some good old fashioned cursing.
Just sold that sled this year too. Think it's cruising around in the Binghamton area.

Check this one out. March 22nd, 2007, snow melted a LOT, but then we got about 3 centimeters, just enough to cover up the rocks. Me and my buddy are out on Winnipeg River and he goes up a rock cliff on the shore just fine. I follow, probably about 30 miles an hour. My ski slipped into a slot in the rock that I couldn't see, bent (more like crumpled) the trailing arm, check out the picture. I was nearly thrown over the hood. This was 2 months after purchase of this brand new sled - 2007 550 Supersport I did drive it home but it was a bitch to move because the ski was bent in, the skis were permanently in this position -> /| Quote originally posted by KingPrat Well mine's not as extreme as that. I've done that too, gas can hits the throttle and just goes, I didn't hit anything though.

Quote sno-x-treme 12-10-2007 It's a bit of an excessively long story...but I'm alive to tell it, and can now laugh about it, so.....This all begins late Friday night when I got a call from a buddy wondering if I wanted to go to his cabin north of Eagle River. His buddies had just called him and were going up too...us deciding to go was pretty random. My plan for the weekend was to spend some time testing everything on the local lake since the trails weren't open. This would have been the first time out after some major changes but I felt confident the sled was ready, and I was really in need of a mini-vacation. At the ass-crack of Saturday morning I drag myself out of bed so I can dig my trailer out and find everything I need. By 7:15am we’re rolling out. Many hours later we arrive to find less snow then at home, but our hopes are high as we’ve got a weekend away and there are usually some good drifts. Very quickly the sleds are off the trailer and warming up. I've got my backpack with an array of tools just in case something happens, along with a camera. Once on the lake I quickly realized I had forgotten the nose piece for my mx style helmet, and it was way too damn cold to ride without, so we head on back to the truck. This is where my story takes a exciting turn, literally.
Once off the lake we have to ride on a few roads to his house. We were going slow, taking it easy, and I was following. Everything is going peachy until I make a full lock right-hand turn into his driveway. At the time I was standing up, coasting. The next thing I know my sled is going like a bat outa hell at WFO. I immediately got my ass sat down and half off the seat by the excessive acceleration. At that moment I was utterly confused as to wtf was happening as my hand wasn't on the throttle, and was trying my hardest to grab all the brake possible to no avail. As I look up I realized there's a very large, green door coming at me slightly (or maybe alot) faster then I knew could be good.
So there I am, standing inside the garage, trying to comprehend what in the hell just happened. There’s steam pouring out of my sled, and for some reason my throttle cable is not in the block and the upper half is just laying there. I turn to my buddy and he's just standing there, shocked. As I begin to realize that me and my sled really shouldn't be where we are it becomes evident that this situation officially sucks more ass then any other I've ever been in. Lots of wtf's begin to fly around and we begin to look things over and try to figure out just what to do. After the impact, part of the door was laying on my sled, cover the entire front end. I had very bad images of the entire front being smashed, and more specifically the new pipes I just finished fitting being smashed. Honestly all I cared about on the sled was the pipes. As we drag it out I look it over and notice....nothing. Well beyond some fancy new green paint and a twisted ski, no obvious other damage is there. The ol' Poo-Bear is one tough sled. The trailing arm, radius arms and shock all look perfect which surprised the hell out of me. Inspection of his dads brand new boat shows nothing as some stacked blankets on the bow of the boat saved the falling door hitting it. Had they not been there there might have been a newpaper article reading "man missing, feared dead"
Soon enough I look at the Club Car golf cart that was parked right where I hit. She looked a little tweaked. When I hit the trailing arm/ski smoked the back corner dead on and kind of tweaked it’s frame. Chalk another one up for the sleds score....sled: 2, garage door: 0, and the newest to the list....golf cart: 0. Very soon it becomes evident that the cart isn’t an immediate issue, but getting a new door or the opening boarded up is as we are suppose to leave the next day. I eventually found a comparable door through Menards, about an hour away. He’s only got a 6’ bed, my trailers only 8’, and the doors 16', so we were faced with a logistical issue. It just happened that those buddies that were also driving up happened to be way behind schedule and were going right past there, with a four place trailer. Hmmm, problem solved. Time to go inside, warm up, and drink myself stupid waiting for the door to show up. We ended up getting it installed that night. Later, as I’m trying to go to sleep I fully realize that I officially suck at life, this is going to make a pretty good story, and I'm slightly pissed it wasn’t on video because I could have been the next youtube superstar.
Now for what the hell caused this. My throttle cable when I turn right gets some slack in it. All of last year I never had an issue and I never thought twice about it. However, this time when I turned right it had enough slack to drop down and get snagged on part of the carb. When I turned back the cable was suddenly too short and outer housing got pulled on. I must had done a fairly swift turn back as it went WFO pretty quick. I suppose the saving part was me trying to steer left away from the corner of the garage because it pulled on the cable housing even more which popped it apart at the junction, releasing the throttle. By this time I was already screwed though. I went from zero to in all of about 1/2 second…that 30 feet got closed upon mighty quick too. And those gearing/clutching/pipe changes I made really makes it hook up good, just in case anyone was curious. The other cool thing is when it hit the sled must have gone into a bit of an endo as my right handlebar made a 3 foot long tear about 5 feet up (3rd panel). Good thing I was off the sled mostly by the time that happened. I’m the most lucky I didn’t smoke the corner of the garage, his truck, or my buddy who had already turned left to park. So here I am, 5 minutes of riding for the season, and I’ve already caused more damage then all of my other seasons combined and multiplied by 10. Good thing I had some extra zip-ties along to tie that cable up. I need another beer.

i was one of those kids who thought that i was invincible and that it would never happen to me it would happen to the other guy. but 3 years ago my life changed. i use to dirt bike every day with the group of kids on the same trails in the same fields but on june 27 2006 i had just gotten out of school 2 hours before for summer break i was riding in a field about 2 miles from my house surrounded by a river and the only way to get in was from the train tracks i was with a group of about 6 kids i went for my last lap around the field and then we were going to leave. well my friend steve dident hear me when i said i was going for a lap and he started to leave, i was coming up to a hill that i had to go down (it was a blind hill about 20 feet down) when i came over the top of the hill all i saw was steve about 10 feet in front of me first instinct hit the breaks and turn the bars well steve was on the left side of the trail and i was on my right and we ended up side swiping at about 30mph my right knee shattered on impact sending my tiba and fibula through the skin i passed out. when i woke up about 5 min later steve was screaming that his arm was broken. so my instinct was to get up and see what happened i tried to stand and i couldn't so i started to panic and started screaming (take into consideration i was 12 at the time) it took the police and firemen an hour and a half to get us to the ambulance i had been bleeding out for about a half hour before they even wrapped my knee i had lost 2/3 my blood the next day the doctor came into the hospital room and said that i had a chance of never walking again if my knee didn't heal right and that if i was in the field for another half hour i would have died. now im walking around with a 10 inch scar on my knee and 4 screws in it.

The first sled I ever had, I hit a telephone poll. The next one, I hit the only tree in our field. I then bought a 96 XCR, I hit a hay rake doing about 50mph, I broke two ribs, my jaw, wrist, fingers and nose plus totaled the sled. I've hit many more trees, rocks stumps, cased jumps, flipped over backwards, rolled down long hills, and anything else you can think of but I still ride. Man I love sleds, good times I tell ya, good times.

my name is shawn and im 15 years old. In august i began restoring a 1981 scorpion sidewinder i got from a friend. I worked over 5 hours a day since august to make it decent. On monday i installed a 12v fuel pump and was riding in my yard. the sled shut off so i pulled the starter and things went bad. me and the sled took off i hit the killswitch but the fuel pump somehow shorted it out. the brake cable had snapped and they i lost control and the throttle stuck. i hit a large pine tree headon (no helmet) at over 70 mph. i then spent a night in the hospital with a broken wrist shattered hip and destroyed foot. my sled is tottaled. the sub frame got pushed back about 7 inches and snapped in half. its a mess of crumbled metal now.

^ If I recall right the sled damage was -bent tunnel -bent plastic ski (it was bent waaaay up in the center. Can see it in the pic) -broke front sway arm linkage -broken fiberglass in the hood and broke hood off sled -bent a-arms -broke front limiter straps (at least) -I think the front bulkhead was broken in 2 -Many handlebar items broke -broken windshield
That picture was taken after I removed the engine that is now in my current zrt.
Crazy stories in this thread. I hate reading them.
Learn from me and others in this thread. Were a tekvest, don't ride at night, don't ride alone, don't ride in a snowstorm with 2 feet visibility.

This past weekend we were ditchbanging and my friend thought it would be cool to try to ride above the cliff, he had to side hill and screwed it up. He made a nice bail and got really lucky. He was fine and his sled only suffered a bent front bumper and a tweaked ski.
The sled was almost straight up and down, before we could whip out the phones and get pics he moved it down a bit lol.

^ If I recall right the sled damage was
-bent tunnel
-bent plastic ski (it was bent waaaay up in the center. Can see it in the pic)
-broke front sway arm linkage
-broken fiberglass in the hood and broke hood off sled
-bent a-arms
-broke front limiter straps (at least)
-I think the front bulkhead was broken in 2
-Many handlebar items broke
-broken windshield
That picture was taken after I removed the engine that is now in my current zrt.
Crazy stories in this thread. I hate reading them.
Learn from me and others in this thread. Were a tekvest, don't ride at night, don't ride alone, don't ride in a snowstorm with 2 feet visibility.
^now you tell us not to ride in a snow storm at night with 2 ft visibility thats how i stuffed my ski into a drainpipe at about 10 mph and bend my raduis rods and ski as i went over the bars luckaly i wasnt going any faster because i would have flown off my sled and my body would have flown into a large boat that was parked for winter outdoors right infront of the pipe

We are lucky so far, and havent had to many accidents. My dad had bought a brand new 96 or 97 Ultra SPX. He was going across a river or lake or something, i forget the story. But i guess he was flying. But he hit a dock that he didnt see. He got a bunch of air, but didnt hurt much. Just bent both rails on the skid up pretty bad, which he said hurt the ride of it. He never did get them fixed, and eventually sold it.3 years ago he was ripping across a field with a foot or two of powder to a road to make a path for us to follow. All of a sudden he dissapeared. He found a sinkhole, and buried the sled in the other side of it. He went over the windshield, but only took a small chunk out of it.
So far here my brother and i have had a few small little incidents, but no damage. There was a group of us riding ditches the last Friday of January, or whenever we had snow. It was a 87 SRV, with 2 bigger guys on it(probably 160-180 each), me, my brotther, and his friend on the Jag. 2 days before our buddy on the Jag hit a culvert doing about 30, and did a superman and flew off and landed in the road. It was at night and the roads were bad so nobody was out. The sled didnt have a scratch on it. Friday we left my brothers, and were crossing a driveway that went across a big dip. Its probably 10 or 15 feet up, and fairly steep. My brothers friend flew across it, but landed on top of the driveway. My brother did the same. I had more speed then them, and almost cleared it. I came up, my front end was high, but the track wasnt high enough. It caught the edge of the driveway, kicked the rear up, and slammed the front end down. Im not sure how, but my right knee got jammed into something really hard, and i ended up with my head on the head light, with one hand on the windshield and the other on the hood. I couldnt move my knee, and it hurt really bad. I thought i had fractured it, but the pain started to let up and i could move it some. It hurt really bad if i moved my knee or put any pressure on it. So i rode ditches the rest of the day kneeling with my right knee on the seat. When i took my bibs off there was a big red stain on my jeans, and around the thermals i had on were red around my knee. The next morning i woke up, and had to slide down the stairs because it hurt to bad to walk. I thought about riding, but it just hurt way to much. But while we were riding that day, we came along a quarter mile long drift. It was 3-6 feet tall, just an amazing drift. I was bouncing along trying to not put much pressure on my knee, when my brother just stopped all of a sudden. It looked like his ski broke, but one of the 2 bolts on the saddle either broke or backed out, causing his ski to go down in the drift and get flipped. We pulled the sled off of the drift, flipped the ski, bent the saddle back so it would fit into his ski, and babied it home. Later that night he was coming home, hit a frozen drift and got thrown into a fence and buried his sled. Luckily the only car he saw that night had 2 guys in it who stopped and helped him get it out. If it wasnt for them he wouldve had to walk home because there was no way i could ride to him and help him get his sled out. It did scratch up the side of his hood, so it pissed him off.
But our little incidents seem like nothing compared to some of the others on here. It makes me want to ride slower and safer.

Well hell look how he took off on that cliff, at an angle like that?!? You gotta hit a cliff square off it or your screwed. Quote originally posted by gordonchaine

Got pnemonia from not being able to use my lungs well 1 week later.. 1,000 black and blue marks to go with it and a 20,000 dollar hospital bill from being in the ICU for a week then reg. room. Hypothermia, severe lung contusion.
Snowmobile crash in march 2005
Before
after
Spleen Splitter, I get it now. The after just looks like the same sled with the motor out and the hood off?
Man you can look at that and tell that snowmobile is toast. Look at the plastic sprayed everywhere! Man you were blessed, thank the lord above your still alive man. Quote originally posted by Sno-X-treme
Your lucky the over head door didnt get you too... those things are really f***ing heavy!

I've been fortunate and haven't crashed hard. This crash was my daughter in January 05. We were in the Eastern UP near Paradise when a trail racer coming the other way missed a turn and to avoid a head on she turned right and went into the trees.

Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

You can get some real d**ks up in paradise. A bunch of people who think they're pro that end up hurting themselves. I was with my father just west of paradise and found a guy on a brand new 2008 Nytro last year. The snowmobile was on top of him and he was pinned underneath... he took the corner going 55 he told us, AND he was standing up! Some people like that just shouldnt ride, he did some serious damage to the plastic on a brand new sled. I woulda killed a small child for the sled he had and he had no respect for it. It was upsetting. But they got the best trails in the country up there and you cant help but ride them.

I like the "bitch" bracelet in picture 2... How old is she? Haha
I am lucky(or maybe smart) and I havent had any crashes yet. I like to ride within my limits, I know when too much is too much, especially on tight twisty trails. I do have a sno-x style chest proctector type thing, but it also has arm and elbow pads, and a kidney belt. I don't ever wear it because it is weird trail riding, but if I had a tekvest I would for sure wear it.

OUCH! Dang man that was a harsh crash on the camera. I seen my friend do that on a dirtbike going through a whoops section. You got lucky I'm guessing, my friend broke his back. One of the scartiest days of my life when your best friend is laying on the track lifeless and you dont know what to do. What happened to the suburban picture? It doest seem like anything is broken. The series you got in the second picture happens all to often. Happened to my friend last year on a brand new 2007 ski doo rev. Trashed the snowmobile when it rolled 5 times.
