Gaylord Trail Report
Trail Report By: Larry of Marsh Ridge Resort, Gaylord Michigan on 2-12-09
Today is the first time this winter that I have to report that the trails are in very bad condition. With the warm temps the last few days the trails have turned to mush. But COLD TEMPS AND SNOW!! is perdicted for Wed night and Thurs. We will have to wait and see how much we get. I have talked to several seld heads the past few days and many are wanting to get a few more weekends in before the end of the season. Marsh Ridge Resort is your #1 place to stay while up North. Great hotel Rooms one,two and Four Bedroom cabins and don't forget our restaurant and bar. We offer great rates and the location cannot be beat. Make Marsh Ridge your choice when making that trip up north. Larry Marsh Ridge Resort marshridge.com 989-732-5552
St. Ignace Trail Report
Trail Report By: St. Ignace Convention & Visitors Bureau 2-09-09
Warm and soft described last Friday and Saturday. A heavy light mist was in the air all day Sat, but no major rain. Yes we did loose some snow, maybe 8" or so, but it did not hurt riding much at all. The only problem it has presented is a couple small spots on the town trail are really dirty, or down to pavement. You have about 2 blocks of that to contend with; other than that everything is good to go. While things were warm, we did get the groomers out to get things flattened out - things should have refrozen nice and smooth. And yes, Dave did get the groomer stuck north of Moran, but Jimmy D was able to help him get it out OK. Weather this morning is at 24d and forecasted to stay below freezing all day. In spite of the doom and gloom forecast, things should be just fine around here for the coming weekend. We are supposed to get warm on Tuesday and stay that way until Wednesday night, when a light rain is supposed to turn back to snow. Downstate is forecasted to be above freezing almost all week, but things should be cooler here. I will give regular updates on conditions to help you would with this weekends riding decisions. Logging Info: There is logging North of Brevort on the Carp River Truck Trail, (#470) towards Trout Lake. They are plowing the trail in this area, and it is perfectly ridable, but has lower snow, and is more icy. With any warm weather this may be a trouble spot. I will report on it as much as I can.
Paradise Trail Report
Trail Report By: Laurie, laurie@bwlakefrontinn.com of the Best Western Paradise 02-12-09
It has just started snowing. It is coming down steady and according to weather.com and our local forecasters it will get heavier later this afternoon. They are saying we should get a few inches today and maybe 1 to 2 more by tomorrow. I do anticipate the snow and with the lake still open it may be heavier then expected. With the falling temperatures and the overnight lows in the teens, all the melting that was going on will stop as of today. Our parking lot held up pretty good, just a few patches showing through. It is icy but I hope we will get some good cover before you arrive. I can not say for sure if the snow we get will improve the roads/shoulders, however, the town trail itself is still deep. The only problem will be crossing parking lots and driveways, if that could be considered a "problem". I spoke to some guests this morning that went to Grand Maris yesterday and they said the trails all the way were great. They had a fantastic time. I would suggest avoiding any trails that are county roads for at least today until they have a chance to freeze up again and maybe get some snow on them. I try my best to give a fair and accurate report based on my experience and others that I talk to. Those of you that know me know that I do not want you to come up here if conditions are bad. I am not going to tell you that it is good unless I really think it is and have talked to our guests who have actually been out there. Like a said before some people have a different perspective of what is considered good conditions. I think we are still at GOOD. I often get the question, "is it worth the 5 hour drive?" I think it depends on your expectations. Are you are expecting everything to be perfect or are you just looking to have a good time on some good trails that you may have to work a little harder to get to. Keep in mind we are less then 1/2 mile to the main trail head. I know it is hard to picture unless you actually know what it is like up here but we still have 2 to 3 feet of snow in the woods. So that is it in a nutshell. Very long winded, I know, but when you have your reputation on the line, you want to make sure that you describe every scenario possible.

Well the temps are dropping and it's snowing!! The groomers were out last nite. The weatherman is calling for cold temps thru the weekend. Lots of people riding today. Its not perfect conditions but it's ridable. Cold temps and grooming along with a little snow to freshen things up. I'll update again tomorrow. CR
Michigamme Trail Report
Trail Report By: Sherri Lefebre, mrr@up.net of: Maple Ridge Resort
Here's the scoop- Remember we have had above normal snow fall for this entire season to date- So did the warm up hurt us - NO -- Yes we did get a little warm up- & Yes we had a few minutes of drizzling rain- not to worry- We still have plenty of snow & YES they are still grooming- The trails are still in great shape- The few spots that were rough -- One being up top side from L'Anse to Big Bay< trail #14 > a small area that is being logged- don't forget we are using state , federal & private land for our trail systems- the loggers earn their living by logging- So deal with a little bit of rough trail- the second spot is where the Baraga groomers turn around on Trail #8 West of Nestoria & the Moose County Groomers turn around East of that said spot- You can slow down take it easy & then give 'er once you are out of that area. The temps are dropping - the predictions are for 50% chance of snow for the next 3 days- So Life is good in the UP & so are the Trails!! Come on UP- 906-323-6334. 3 night minimum - heated pole barn- 1000 sq ft units with 2 bedrooms-sleeps 4 very comfy!! full kitchens- 6 trail loops from our back door. Ride safe & sober & stay on your side of the trails!

Im also hoping to bring together a snowmobile ride next winter of some SFers from michigan. Possibly take a 4 day weekend and ride across the UP and back. I want to make a trip with about 10 people that dont mind going fast. I want to do a cross country UP trip from St Igance to Silver City and back. I'd like to make it a SF tradition and continue to do it through the years. Anyone from michigan who are interested just post a comment on this thread and ill get ahold of you.

i went up last weekend to gaylord and honestly, the conditions were not bad at all! we rode out of waters and rode as far east as lovells and as far south as grayling, as far east as starvation lake, and as far north as chandler hills. Not a single trail was really bare, the only place that was bad was on the grade just south of chandler hills there is a mile and a half strech of pure dirt, but other than that the trails were flat, and not that bad. I was actually INCREDIBLY suprised. I might have seen 2 dozen snowmobiles in the three days i was on the trails. We put 450+ miles on. I will admit though that the mile and a half strech on the grade it completely wore out the hyfax. But with the snow theyre getting the next three days the trails will be pristine. Anyone who cancelled their plans this last weekend missed out... it was alot better then you might have thought.
as for the ride, i already have one guy 100% commited, but he is my roommate in college so naturally he is gonna go with me haha. im thinking we might even take some trails into wisconsin and bang out even more miles there. but i've never rode in wisconsin so i really dont know the trails there. i know the UP like the back of my hand, but wisconsin is completely foreign for me, so id like to possibly get a few riders that know alot about wisconsin riding.
ohh and for the trail reports, ill be posting reports on every thursday from around the state, stay tuned.

Newberry Area Trail Report:
DATE: February 18, 2009
BASE: 6 to 10 inches
PAST 24 Hrs: 5 inches plus
CONDITION: Good to Very Good
North trails were groomed last night and rated as good to very good. The south trail will be groomed later this morning. TASA will be out during the day grooming since they are working with two groomers. More snow on the way. Should be a good weekend for riding.
Trail Report By: Laurie, of the Best Western
Paradise Paradise Area Trail Report:
DATE: Thursday, February 19th, 2009
BASE: Still very very good
PAST 24 Hrs: Blowing snowing drifting
CONDITION: Good to Excellent
I was going to wait until later today to update this but I wanted to let you know that we did receive around 8 to 10 inches of snow from Tuesday night to around midday yesterday. We are still under a winter storm warning since last night through tonight but we didn't get much snow, maybe a couple of inches. It is really blowing and some drifting is occurring. This is supposed to be over by late tonight and then clear up tomorrow with partly sunny skies. There were quite a few different groups talking by the fireplace this morning about their rides yesterday, and they all said great things about the trails and the groomers. We did have one mishap and it involved someone taking the whole corner and hitting an oncoming sledder. The oncoming sledder was one of our guests who were hit and now their 5-day trip ended 3 days early as he is on his way back home to have surgery on his hand. It was their first ride out. The person that hit him was standing up, and going way too fast, just missed the first two and got the third person. Please, please, please slow down on the corners, stay on your side of the trail, and sit down until you have rounded the corner. If you want to go like hell after that then fine, but make sure you can see what is coming. IT JUST MAKES SENSE! Now that I said my peace with my best "mommy" voice, come on up, the trails are great and we have plenty of snow with more (up to 10 inches) by tonight. I will update tomorrow morning.

Munising Trail Report:
DATE: 2/17
BASE: 10++
PAST 24 Hrs: 3
CONDITION: Good to Very Good
Look for light to moderate snow to develop during the overnight hours tonight. Expect the snow to intensify during the day Wednesday as north winds increase and temperatures fall. Wind gusts of 35 to 50 mph are possible Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning... which will result in blizzard conditions at times. Look for conditions to slowly improve Thursday afternoon and evening. Total snowfall amounts of 12 to 18 inches are possible from this storm... greatest over the higher terrain from Negaunee to Skandia... Trenary and Chatham. Latest from NWS. E Mail from the groomers.....We have two groomers out today one left at 6A to go to the beartap, miners, coalwood, buckhorn, and baldy to the 440. and one going thru munisising, christmas, north hiawatha, coalwood and possibly the buckhorn. the same shift and route will be run tomarrow also.
Report By: Don & Diane Reed Fox River Motel, Seney Michigan
Seney Trail Report:
DATE: 2/19/2009
BASE: 0-10"
PAST 24 Hrs: 3-8"
CONDITION: Fair to Very Good
The storm warning is on until 7 pm today and it is still snowing. In the last 2 days we got 12" here in town and 18" up north. Once you get past the staging areas the trails are in very good shape again. The wet snow we had yesterday really packed in nice. 431 just out of Seney we are still calling fair. The snow is still thin there and it is icy underneath. The icy part is also a little rough and can't be cut down and that is why we are sticking with fair for now. Mind you riding out of town on sled is not a problem; everything is snow covered, just watch the corners.
Trail Report By: Tom McCarthy of BERGLAND BAY BAR
Bergland, Lake Gogebic Trail Report:
DATE: 02-19-2009
BASE: Hard Packed
PAST 24 Hrs: 2-4 inches
CONDITION: Very Good
Riders yesterday reported very good conditions in our area. We did not get the all the snow forecasted but we probably still got around 6 inches all togeather. A lot of wind and blowing snow so it is hard to tell. But a good refresh for the streets and trails.
I received a few phone calls asking if our trails are even ridable or if we have any snowmobiliers stopping in the bar at all. I don't know what the word is down by some of you, but our trails are in great shape. We have plenty of snow.
I know I may piss some people off from time to time, but some people are just not worth having as a customer. If you are an IDIOT stay home. We do not want you here. You just ruin it for everyone. Someone got pissed at me and tore down all my trail signs. Nice job. But what really bugs me is they took one sign and pointed it to a berm that had railroads ties on the other end of it. It is one thing if you get mad at me and destroy my property but putting others in danger with your stupidity? There is no place for you in the UP, Stay home.

The above link is a honest snowmobile report done by groomers in Antrim/Kalkaska county. They will not BS you. It is to thier advantage if you do not show up, cause they will not have to groom as often.
If you are in need of info from other areas, click on snowmobile trail conditions at the top, and go to your area of interest. I have not checked any area except Antrim/Kalkaska, so I do not know who is posting in other areas.
Sorry it sounds like a disclaimer or something.

Time for some more updates!
I looked on hookedonmichigan.com, the post just dont seem to be that in dpeth and many are local business owners much like my source... so ill stick with mine.
Gaylord Trail Report:
DATE: Feb 23rd
BASE: 5-10"
PAST 24 Hrs: 2-6- new snow
CONDITION: Ver Good
Wow!!!! what a great weekend. The trails were packed and with all the fresh snow it was some great riding. It was great to see so many of you here at Marsh Ridge this past weekend. all the reports we got said the trails were good to excellent. This week more snow on Wed and Thurs. This should make for another great weekend.
Indian River Trail Report:
DATE: Thursday, 2-26-09, 9:15 a.m.
BASE: 4-8"
PAST 24 Hrs: Freezing rain, then snow
CONDITION: Good to great
It was a busy weather day around here yesterday...and it looks like we're going to stay busy with changing weather again today. Here's a wrap up: We had about a half-hour of freezing rain pellets yesterday around noon, which quickly changed over to heavy snow. The temperature got about 33-35 and the snow came down hard. We got about 3" of dense, moist snow. Later in the day the temperature dropped some and the air became very cold and damp. We did have another round of light freezing drizzle in the early evening and overnight conditions were still. Our guys did groom last night and I bet they had their hands full with the heavy snow. We usually can't groom when it's at or above freezing because the snow gets stuck in the drag and ends up tearing the trail apart (not to mention areas where the tractors can sink and get stuck). I have not been able to reach a groomer driver this morning to see how things went but I feel quite confident in saying conditions are very good to great for riding. I won't rate them excellent until I can talk to a driver. If anything, you may have a few thin, icy spots in corners where the snow hardend overnight. Right now we are at about 25 for temps and will get up to 30-32. So we will keep the awesome, dense snow we received. Even better news is the crazy storm that's moving in this afternoon. It will start out like yesterday in that there will be a dividing line of rain/snow to the system. We may see a few light sprinkles before it changes over or it may fall entirely as snow. The snow will not start piling up until the wee hours of tonight, then look out! We are predicted to receive 9 inches as the temperatures dive into the teens! Holy smokes. Talk about a great weekend to ride. We will have stable temps in the high teens to low 20's all weekend so no fear of softening snow. Plan to dress for the cold and we'll hope for some sun as well. Be sure to check in tomorrow for the latest and if you don't see another post today that means I confirmed trail conditions as good to great with last night's drivers, ok? Thanks for reading!
Paradise Area Trail Report:
DATE: Wednesday, February 25, 2009
BASE: At least 1 foot maybe some areas 2
PAST 24 Hrs: Heavy snow right now
CONDITION: Great
Still looking at near perfect conditions for riding in the U.P. We are under a winter storm watch for today and then again for tomorrow evening through Friday morning. Nothing like last week, (16 inches) but today 2 to 4 and tomorrow a couple more. But seriously, we really do not need anymore. Yes, it is nice to get that extra two every now and again just to spruce things up, but we literally have snow measured in feet still. All trails are in great shape and our groomers go out every day/night. We have had an overwhelming amount of compliments regarding our groomers. I try not to guarantee anything because it usually comes back to haunt me, but I am guaranteeing that extra hour passed the bridge is worth it. We have a group of guys from the Brighton area, Jason, Jordan, Tommy, Anthony, and Brian, that just left this morning for a trip across the U.P. and will return on Saturday. They will be riding on numerous trail systems and I will be sure to get a report when they get back and pass it on to you.
Newberry Area Trail Report:
DATE: February 25, 2009
BASE: 6 to 10 inches
PAST 24 Hrs:
CONDITION: Good to Excellent
TASA grooming each and every day/nite. #9 South to Rexton,Cut River & Trout Lake will be groomed today/tonight so watch for the groomer. Last night both #45 Falls trail and #9 North were groomed. #45 Falls trail is rated as very good to excellent, #9 North as good to very good. There is still lots of snow UP here and from the sounds of it, lots more on the way Thursday. Head on UP cuz the season will be ending a little over a month from now
Watersmeet Trail Report:
DATE: 2/25/09
BASE: hard-packed
PAST 24 Hrs: 1"
CONDITION: Very Good
We received about an inch of fresh snow. The forecast calls for more snow tomorrow. The groomers are out daily grooming the trails. Our guests tell us that the trails are great. Use caution, corners are still a little icy. The season is far from over up here so come on up and put some miles on! Just a reminder UP Trails are open until March 31st.
Bergland, Lake Gogebic Trail Report:
DATE: 02-26-2009
BASE: Hard Pached
PAST 24 Hrs: Snow coming Later Today
CONDITION: Very Good - Excellent
Riders reported trails in very good condition yesterday. Lake Gogebic has flattened out due to riders and more snow. Forecast looks great for the weekend, more snow and colder temps. Resorts and Hotels are filling up for the weekend so expect heavy traffis and please ride smart and safe.
Slow it down around corners, I hear of a lot of near misses out there. People just don't realize if you get hurt out there on the trail it could be hours before help arrives. Respect the towns you drive through, go slow and stop at stop signs. Don't give people a reason to complain.
once again, if you have any special request on a certain area just let me know.
also, a great place to see snow cams is johndee.com, then from there on the left side of the page click on Northwoods Cam Network... pictures updated at least every 4 hours.

Time for some more updates!
I looked on hookedonmichigan.com, the post just dont seem to be that in dpeth and many are local business owners much like my source... so ill stick with mine.
As I stated,,,,,the area I ride Antrim co. is only done by groomer John AKA the horney groomer...I have not used it for other areas but In Antrim and Kalkaska area they are spot on.....
yeah that'd be nice if they had a web page that was purely the groomers giving trail reports. and each time they groom come in with a report or something.

What more do you want the volunteer groomers to do....I will believe a groomer op. over the resort owners listed above anyday. IMO
How in depth must it be???? a trail is nice, or snirt, or dirt.
I will say that the Mancelona trails were great last weekend, and I would just as well see everyone stay home. More trail terrorizing for me..And less sno-crosser want-a-be's I have to deal with.
I've never had a ten But I've had 5 two's

GUYS, I posted this website a almost a month ago on this same post for people looking for groomer reports.
http://www.msasnow.org/trail_conditions/...eports.asp
Just click on your area, groomers update when they get done grooming most nights!
When there is alot of snow and grooming they update our areas trails bi-nightly.
