I am new to this site and love it so far. I posted thread before but pretty sure it was in wrong category, so here it goes. I have a 2000 Yamaha SXr 700. It has about 5000 miles on it. I recently purchased it, fixed a couple small things that were wrong, (pull starter and i put aftermarket can on it.) I was riding it yesterday, and it ran awesome. Has new track on it, and a new belt. On it when i purchased it. Im a big guy, about 290 pounds, my brother, who goes about 230, stood on back, and i proceeded forward bout 20 feet to drop him off at garage. Alot of weight i know. I did go very slow, maybe like 5 or 10. He jumped off, i went to take off and heard a terrible noise. Sounds and feels like cogs are skipping on track (maybe). Only at very low speed it does this, and when u first take off. if you were cruising about 10-15 it seemed to stop. I picked back end up and gave it throttle and no noise. Is it possible bearings went bad? or track came loose? What do i need to check? Any help would be greatly appriciated.

I have had this happen twice myself at about 300ish lbs. First time was on my 1990 indy 400. (was the drive shaft bearing) Replaced that and the chain and gears. Second time was my 1997 indy ultra spx (turned out to be the driven clutch was stuck open) so it just sat there and skipped when any weight was on the track. Check both. If the bearing you will still go forward but it will clunk like mad. If it is the driven clutch it will just sit there and rev up and clunk.

Good luck

Thanx Big Guy!! It was still moving, just clunking alot. I took chaincase apart and checked everything.... wouldnt you know the bearing on right side on shaft was in pieces. This might explain why previous owner have tensioner on chain cranked all the way tight and there was still slop in it. Does anyone know can i change right side bearing with out pulling shaft? Or should i just tear it down and replace both sides. The snow is melting, wanna try to get a little more riding done this year. But hate to put back together and hve other side go out. Thanks!!!!

I changed mine with out removing the shaft. I loosened the track all the way, mind you it was still a real b*tch but it worked none the less. Good luck and after that it should be smooth sailing for a long time :-p. Mine kept breaking and we couldn't figure it out and all of a sudden we found that bearing on the right side to be the cause and since they she has been a real champ.

If you are going to tear it apart it is better to just replace all of the bearings you dissassemble. I have done just 1 to go 50 miles and lose the bearing and shaft on the other side.

usually the side with the speedo cable will go first. most people forget to grease it all the time. the speedometer quitting is usually the "tell-tale" sign.....

i just rebuilt my whole skid, i am about 180 lbs and jumped mine, it made the same kind of noise you described, my front shock frame was broken and my top shaft (the big one, nearest to the back that holds the two little bogey wheels on and bolts to the tunnel) was broken as well. it cost me 130$ from yamaha for the shaft, the rest i did myself. not a very hard fix if you know what your doing.
