Well guys, I took the plunge and grabbed a new house while the market was still perfect for the buyer. It's a modest rambler built in 71'. It's completely livable as is but I'm going to do a few things before I start moving in.
First thing, Friday I have a plumber coming over to run a gas line to the the kitchen for a gas range. While there I'll be having him run gas to the deck for my grill (no more 20 pounders ), as well as gas line to the garage for a heater, and finally a hot water spicket to the inside of the garage for my pressure washer. Then that will be getting rocked, taped, and painted.
The advice I'm most interested in is in the kitchen department. The kitchen isn't huge by most peoples standards, but good sized. I've purchased a new fridge, range, dishwasher and microwave. Now I need to fill in the gaps. Countertops and cabinets. I'll be doing the floor myself.
What do you guys recommend for countertop material? I'd like to stay away from a laminate however, I know the stone and composite countertops can get pricey in a hurry. As far as cabinets go, I don't know if I should just have the existing ones refaced and new hardware put on, or go new completely. Of course new is my first choice but I'm wondering what the difference in cost is. I realize there are many variables in these decisions but I'm just looking at my options at this point. Being that we don't plan on moving in til the end of March or so, it would be nice to have the remodel done before we start settling in.
Also, if there are any LICENSED, BONDED, GC's in the Andover area that are looking for work feel free to PM me if you would like to look at the job. I have not looked at contractors yet and I know a lot of them are hurting for work. I'd much rather give it to a fellow fanatic than someone I find in the yellow pages.
Thanks Ahead of time,
Adam

One thing that was brought up to me when we remodeled our kitchen, is check the weight of the countertop, some is to heavy for the floor supports.

Quote originally posted by sledneck1978 ^^^That stuff looks very cool.....you priced it out yet?? Only at lowes (or home depot). And it was still stupid priced. I am supposed to be drawing mine up here and sending it to a guy I met that works with granite reminants that are very inexpensive so I am told. But I have other priorities at the moment to deal with it. I have laminate in my house and it sucks. It started peeling up and I tried to take it all off to reglue it and wouldn't you know, the damn thing tore up the center. So now my counter top is torn down the middle. I don't care. I will have it fixed eventually. The bitch is the size. With custom sized countertops, choices tend to get limited. I am waiting to do it all at nice. Under counter sink, new faucet, new backsplash, and new counter tops. All in one. I have priced all that stuff and ALL of it will be coming from the internet. Home depot and lowes are a rip off.

Yeah - once laminate is glued, it is glued! You will ruin the laminate trying to take it back off. Usually the plywood under the laminate has to be replaced as well because it glue residue from the old laminate will show up as bumps through your new laminate.
I've seen a few people putting in countertops that are made from granite tiles. Nice thing about that is if you make a mistake cutting or something you only screw up one tile instead of the whole countertop.

Hey, the place that supplies home depot with the corian is in fargo. I have a cutting board made of it. I used to work with a guy that worked there. I think the place is called fabricators unlimited, or something like that.

Congratulations on the purchase. Def a great time to buy. Best advise I can give you is be patient and wait for deals. I did my entire kitchen top to bottom, new EVERYTHING for less than $13,000. And that inncludes granite countertops, faux stainless appliances, and porcelain tile floor. Course I did everything myself.
Good luck
Heres a few pics before I finished all the trim and before the cabinet went above the fridge.

My cousin and her husband just did their kitchen and put in butcher block countertops from a lumber liquidator and only paid $500 for the entire countertop.
Matt, I used these guys when I did my countertop. http://www.graniteguys.net/ $55 sq/ft installed!! For granite. I know its a ways for them to go to you, but they came to me in Albany from Eastern Mass, its worth a shot to see if theyll go as far you. Best price I ever heard for granite and FAR cheaper than Corian.

That is seriously the identical kitchen we have choosen, minus the island cause we don't have the room for it. Same color cabinets and everything. Nice job man!! Very good advice too

Well, friday we made up our minds...the countractor left with a downpayment
My old man's good buddy is a extremely meticulous and just all around great carpenter. We're getting all new cherry cabinets, cambria countertops (haven't picked out color yet) very nice stainless appliances, and of course all the little stuff (trim, backsplash, hardware, ect...).
I'll get some before pics so you guys can see how horrible it looks now, and of course after pics.
My wife and I are super pumped about this. Unfortunately it won't be done for about a month. That's o.k....that's about when we planned on moving in anyway. Once the base cabinets are installed the countertop guys have to come and get their measurements, and from there it'll be two weeks or so.
Thanks for the opinions guys!

Cambria? I wonder if I can get that here in NY. I looked it up and it is better than granite. How does the costs compare?

Compared to granite I'm not too sure but it would have cost 2800.00 for laminate and it was just over 5200 for the cambria. It's made very close to me (within 75 miles) so I don't know how easy it would be to get in your part of the country. You could probably get something close though....it's just a quartz counter top. The color we picked is knottingham (sp?) and most people say you would have to be a rock expert to tell it's not granite. I'm so pissed they're holding us up. We're ready to move in!
