Polaris 800 crank failure

Now I know the issue with these earlier model 800 crank failure is not an uncommon occurence! I've visited numerous sites where riders are raising the same issue. I bought my sled in Nov 06' as a left over. Took the one additional year of coverage, which ran out in Nov 08'. I've got 1598 miles on it and it's out of service! The dealer tells me about 2k to repair with stock parts! So what do I put it back together and keeep my fingers crossed? I know there's an upgrade kit for around $300. Anyone have this done already?
