    Vintage track tightness

I have 2 1980 polaris snowmobiles. Owners manual says 1/2 to 3/8" gap between track and hi fax with a 10lb weight hanging from center of track. This is with the "new" style suspension. When I do that, the track is way too tight and and won't spin unless you're over 2500 rpm. I have had it set to 1/2" with no weight for the last 1500 miles but have noticed considerable wear to the last 6" of (rear) hi fax. Trying to figure out what the right setting is. Anyone know?

Loosen the track up a bit until it ratchets and then snug it back up some. Are they studded?

They aren't studded. What do you mean by ratcheting? Mine just have a bolt with a jam nut for adjustment; one on each side of the sled. Turning the bolt in makes it tight and then I just snug up that nut to lock it.

You want to loosen the adjusters until the track starts to skip on the drive cogs when accelerating....then tighten it up just a scoche. This works on my older stuff....and even most of the newer stuff for that matter.
