well, the sp will supposedly smoke the non-sp in power, and ves engines are supposed to also get better fuel milage. oil consumption is waaaaay worse for a ves though, around 100 miles to a quart- mine is right around 250-300/quart (non-ves) reliability is really a toss up i think. that engine is a proven reliable polaris powerplant, and i've never has a problem with mine in 3000 miles. and i love it!! wouldn't mind a bit more power, but it's enough to kill me and keep up with my bro's 98 xc 600 on hardpack. i personally would go with the sp because of little things like better shocks (correct me if i'm wrong but i thought the 01 sp's had heavier shocks) and the increased power. if you get the sp and don't like it, i'd be happy to trade for a non ves

The sp's had exhaust valves and fox shox all the way around. and the non sp's didnt have exhaust valves and had indy selct shocks. and the sp's killed the non sp's on top end.

Ride Polaris!
The XC (non-ves) will not require you to clean exhaust valves avery once in a while.
That is the only thing i could think of that would be a downside to having the XC SP.

The 01 SP as stated already has Fox shocks all the way around, it also has the exhaust valves. It's a nice sled with an excellent motor. The 01 XC is a very nice sled (I know my dad owns one) It is set up the same as the SP but without the Fox shocks all around. It still has the Fox PPS in teh rear though. The motor is stronger than the SP in the bottom end, same hp's in the mid range as the SP, and then the SP takes over on top because of the exhaust vavles. I believe it's only a 5 hp difference on the top end. I know the regular XC rocks and it's plenty quick. Stock it was faster than my stock ZL500, but now it's not.

Either one is a great trail machine, and I would lean towards the XC non-valved, as it's gets great gas mileage (14mph agressively ridden), maitence is very low (add oil, grease the suspenders every so often and ride) and the low end power is awesome.

But either way you cannot loose!

The 500 SP's engine also has NiCaSil lined cylinders.

Does anyone have fuel mileage figures for the 500 with VES, I have heard that the 600 VES is thirsty, is the 500 that way too?? Thanks alot.

My buddy's '01 XC 500 SP gets a little better mileage than my '98 XCR 440 SP

Who buys a sled for fuel economy anyway?

my non-ves gets 10-12, but it runs extremely rich. i expect a couple more miles per gallon with better fuel delivery.

lol, i have never actually figured out my exact mileage on any snowmobile...i figure if i put 10 gallons in and go 100 miles..i dont really care how much gas she takes, i know its gonna take alot tho. wonder how good the RX1 is gona be for mileage? 4stroke so it should be pretty good.

Ready to Ride...NEED SNOW!!!!!!...if you have snow, i hate you...
