My Bro's 800 started making a weird noise lately. We just
had the top end gone thru, and got it home and he noticed it
was doing this glitchy "er er er" sound, like the clutch was
getting worn or a really hard pre-det sound or something.

We tried 4 different clutches and couldn't find any differences.

any ideas?

Definitely from the engine/clutch area.

I took a video of the engine running while Arn was revving it
up and down.
(posted at Youtube) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjtUj1uiwvo
but it's pretty hard to hear the noise on it like you can with the
naked ear. It's not really a tick, and it's really isn't a miss
either. The best way I can explain is almost like the sound an
electric motor makes when stopped instantly when it's overloaded,
except for that it's a VERY instantaneous noise.

Also, it doesn't do it EVERY time it idles down, but sometimes it
does it once, and sometimes twice or more when it idles down,

If you do check the video out, try to listen very closely just after
he lets off the throttle and the engine is about halfway to two thirds
back down to low idle. It seems like it does it most when it's been
revved up to about 3000 RPM or so and then let off.

Doesn't do it when it simply idles and we haven't dared to really
"get on it" to see what it does when it's run faster than that.

I've talked to a couple different dealers here in NW IA but haven't
found anyone that knows the correct way to check run out on the crank,
any pointers on that?

Thanks,

Ed.

It is hard to tell from the video. I don't have any experience with 800 twins, but I know some motors, the XCR 440s especially, just made constant whirring noise at the clutch.

When my 700 RMK idles down it makes a sound almost like a knock or a tick. I traced it down to the clutch and it sounds like the weights on the rollers. Its hard to tell with the video but are you sure its not just something as simple as that? Its not a problem if you find out thats whats causing it.
