Alright experts, I have a question about a "Pinging" noise when my 97 Mach 1 idles. I was tinkering with my Mach 1 today and after I cold started it, I heard a "Pinging" noise. Seems like there is a pinging noise as the motor cycles, only at idle: "ping, ping, ping, pah-ping ping, ping, ping, ping, pah-ping, ping ping"...if that makes any sense. Once the motor warms and I take it for a short spin, the noise goes away. I am trying NGK BR9YES plugs and have them gapped to .018. I think Ski Doo came out and said to run BR9ES plugs in this sled after the BR10ES it originally called for were not hot enough and fouled easily. Could it be these plugs firing weird? Could it be poor gas (Running 91 octane)? Could it be my primary clutch making a funny noise because of worn parts? Could it still be something more major like a crank bearing? My clutch spins tight, with no play and I hear no funny noises from the crank when I manually spin the clutch, turning the crank with the motor off. The sled runs great and I really don't want to have to stick money in the motor for a "What if"....although that could become an "oh crap" if I don't I suppose! Any ideas or advice for a mild "Pinging"? Thanks!!

I think it may be your pipe. My 98 mxz670 had a ping on start up as well. Also check your exhaust mainfolds for cracks and wear. Mine was toast and had to replace it. Cost me 50 for the y pipe and 200 in labor cause those crappy hex head bolds that skidoo used were all stripped out.

Just so you know a "ping" is a commonly used word for detonation.
It could be detonation if its a very fast steady ping. it could be the primary clutch if the spring cup bushing or moving flange bushing is worn out but it would have to idle pretty low in order for you to hear that in most cases.
How loud is the noise exactly? Is it very noticable? or barely?

Could be other things but just to be on the safe side I would check the timing and most likely throw out the gas thats in it just as a precaution. If it is detonation its going to burn the motor down.

I'll check the exhaust Robosnow, thanks. BskidooC, it pings every time the motor seems to do a revolutuion at idle, 1500 rpm....but only at first start up. Once the motor is warmed and I run it for a short distance, the noise goes away. The noise is not real loud, but is noticeable once the sled is first started. Should I try some 92 or 93 octane gas if I can find it? Think my plugs are gapped too tight at .018?
