I have the stock gearing in my 98 xc700, and 2 years ago i installed a 136" track. I've tuned the clutch and it rips and roars the way it is, but i was looking for a little more punch on the low end. Does anyone know what type of gearing set up would work? I ride mostly trails, but rarely go over 90mph, so top end isn't a factor for me. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Stock gearing is 24-40. I had the same sled strecthed to 136, You could
gain maybe a little with a 22T or 23T. Just make sure you are hooking up.

I have a 99xc700 with a 144" and I am running a 23-41 and love it! You can use the stock chain, and the dogleg in the chain is almost none, compared to a 22-40.

Are the gears 11 wide, or 13 wide?

Depends on the track you are running and if its studded. I put a 136 Cobra track in my 98 XC 700 a couple years ago. I went with 22/40 gear and it ran good, would still go over 100mph on GPS. Then last year I put in 23/40 gear and I like that a little better. Either ratio is better then stock.

Pockets on HCS would probably say to stay stock, I noticed when I did the 22-40 that I had a flat mid range, now with mine it seems to pull hard all the way through, up over 100 on the speedo, and at 60-65 if I hit the throttle it will pull the skis a little, so fast enough for me.
