We were on a trail ride on New Year's Day, about 1.5 miles from the nearest road, when our 2004 Polaris Supersport 550 (fan cooled) randomly lost power and died. We tried starting it up right away, but nothing happened, so we were going to tow it, but decided to try starting it again after it sat for about 15-20 minutes. It started, and as we drove it to the road, it would start to lose power, but if you backed off the throttle and hit it again, power would come back for about 10 seconds, then it would lose power again. We got it to the road, and it died and wouldn't start back up. We took it home on the trailer. Fast forward to today... I went out to see if it would start. It did, but it wouldn't run unless you gave it a little throttle. It didn't sound right, either. Also, it was making a "Pfff" noise every few seconds, kind of like the noise a single piston engine would make. Any ideas to what might be wrong?
Thanks!
