I'm a new owner of a 2009 Yamaha Nytro. I'll be using the sled primarily for backcountry ski access. Thus, I want to start climbing and towing as soon as possible. The Owner Manual is a little vague on a recommended break in period (0 - 100 miles avoid prolonged operation above 6000 r/min, 100-300 avoid prolonged operation above 8000 r/min). I don't have a huge desire to go put 100s of miles on my sled on trails. Furthermore, any tips on preventative maintenance during this initial period?

Thanks!

Read the info on mototuneusa.com. Under breakin secrets. Alot of guys have used this method including myself and seen great results. Basically drive it hard.

I wouldn't break in a 4 stroke hard, a 2 stroke yes! Take your time, break it in per Yamaha's recommendations.
